| I need more mags for you 1911 and have been reading about Checkmate. Anyone have good or bad to say about them. I am only looking at 7 round mags right now. |

Yes, 7rd. Checkmates would be a very good choice if you want a flush-fit magazine (I personally don't like base pads, so flush-fit is what I focus on). 7rd. works best in a flush-fit; 8rd to work right really requires a slightly longer body (hence why Wilson, Tripp, etc. and others build their 8rd. mags that way). Very well-built mags with good feeding design are, in my experience and opinion:
Colt factory (subcontracted by Checkate and Metalform - that is what the "C" or "M" on the bottom back edge means) Checkmate and Metalform mags (especially the flat, dimpled follower type with hybrid feedlips - and especially Checkmate's "bullnose" follower) Tripp mags Others like CMC - I find the follower design works, but destabilizes as the springs wear, creating last-round FTF and lock-back problems prematurely. If it had a skirted follower to stabilize it or a better spring strength/design, it could be great. Others also really like Wilson - I find Tripp a much better design (follower and feed lips, as well as springs) for a few dollars less. If you have some good quality mags that are not working reliably, I recommend Tripp's 7rd conversion kit - their skirted, steel insert follower and a ISMI spring. Nice option for $8 (five or more) to get your existing mags working well. Under no circumstances throw your money away on "GI mags," especially the vast quantity of fakes sold at gun shows, gunbroker, and many gun forum classifieds' sections, etc. Many of them have fake numbers stamped on them or even Government looking wrappers to fool people. If you shop around you can find good deals on Colt factory mags and Checkmate and Metalform. Tripp will cost more, and you never see anybody sell them used (hint). |

Checkmate is one of the OEM manufacturers for Colt. Look on the baseplate of a Colt magazine, if you see a C, that is a Checkmate magazine. I only use 7 round magazines, and all mine are Checkmate, some with the pony on the floorplate, some with the chess piece.

Those that have them. Did you order from Checkmate or somewhere else. I would like to get a couple and try them in my Colt andcompare them to a couple ot Kim-Pro mags I have. Straight from Checkmate http://www.checkmateindustries.com/contact.htm |
| I use the Checkmate flush fitting 7 rounders (and 6 round Officer mag) and they have been good magazines. They have several to choose from. I use the ones with the flat, dimpled follower and hybrid feed lips. On my Officer mags, I use the bullnose follower to keep the follower from gouging the ramp of an alloy framed gun I have. |
