Its easy to boycot Steyr because of what they did. Will anybody suggest sanctions of boycots of Glock for doing the same thing? Glock sells 30,000 handguns to Iran Report: Austria approves export of 30,000 handguns to Iran The Associated Press Friday, February 16, 2007 VIENNA, Austria Austrian authorities have approved the export of 30,000 handguns to Iran, local media reported Friday, days after a report that sophisticated Austrian rifles were finding their way into the hands of Iraqi insurgents. Austrian media reported the pistols had been sold to Iran's interior ministry, which is in charge of the police force. Austrian economic ministry officials told state radio that their ministry had approved the sale of the "Glock" pistols last month, saying Iranian authorities had provided documentary evidence that they would not be passed on to others. Another request for the weapons from the Iranian army was denied after it refused to give such assurances, said the officials, adding such sales to police were allowed under legislation governing the export of weapons. The sales were first reported by the Austria Press Agency Friday, citing a story in preliminary copies of Saturday's edition of the daily "Oesterreich." After-hours phone calls to the ministry were not answered. On Tuesday, Britain's "Daily Telegraph reported that American troops have recovered more than 100 "Steyr .50 HS" rifles in Iraq, part of an Austrian consignment of 800 such weapons delivered to Iran over American protests that they could be given to insurgents, The Austrian government approved the sale of the rifles, made by precision weapons maker Steyr Mannlicher GmbH, after it concluded in 2004 that they would be used to fight narcotics smugglers. "We checked the proposal very thoroughly," Austrian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Astrid Harz said, noting that the situation in Iraq and the region in 2003-2004 was very different then it is today. "What happened to the weapons then is the responsibility of the Iranians." In comments to The Associated Press at the time, former Steyr owner Wolfgang Fuehrlinger said U.S. Embassy officials had expressed concerns that the rifles could be used against American troops in Iraq, adding that he had rebuffed a request to stop such sales. The 12.7 x 99 mm rifles are about 1.2 meters (4 feet) long, weigh more than 12 kilograms (20 pounds) and count as an anti-armor weapon among experts because of the high punch of its projectile, Fuehrlinger said. Franz Holzschuh, Steyr's CEO, said Tuesday the company had not officially been contacted by anyone to verify the serial numbers on the rifles. He said there was a possibility the weapons were reproductions and that there were "thousands" of these in circulation. "Fact is, we never delivered to Iraq," he said. The U.S. imposed sanctions on Steyr in December 2005, forbidding it from obtaining U.S. export licenses to do business in America. The Austrian government condemned the decision at the time, saying it made no sense to punish the company after the fact. Holzschuh said there were still U.S. sanctions against his company. Edit to add correction: Thanks to those who posted this. It seems the AP can't figure out who's who in the middle East. They ran the above story which is explosive in its impact, but then printed a short retraction as shown below: Retraction VIENNA, Austria: In stories Feb. 16 and Feb. 17 about weapons sales, The Associated Press, citing Austrian news media reports, erroneously reported that Austrian authorities approved the export of 30,000 handguns to Iran. The weapons were sold to Iraq, not Iran. |

You're fairly ignorant if you think money doesn't rule the sales of firearms to any individual, group, or country if a WAR isn't declared. What do you propose we do, throw all our Glocks away, nuke Austria and Gaston Glock? If you don't like Glocks, just say so!!!! And lets shoot that Russian SOB Kalishnikov for inventing the AK and arming so many insurgents around the world!!!
|
I own Glocks pistols and Steyr rifles. I'll never buy another new one of either though because of what they have chosen to do. Money may rule, but that also means my money and the money of American's also matters and we can make a statement with that money. That statement is "Screw them". |
It appears you are a half ass then if you won't buy any more Glocks or Steyrs. If you weren't half ass, you'd get rid of the Glocks or Steyrs you do own. Are you a tree hugger, too? You know one of those type who talks about "global warming" but drives a gas guzzling SUV all the time? When you speak of boycotting Glock, then maybe we should boycott the Russian and Chinese goods because the make some of the ammo that is killing our soldiers in Iraq! Get real! |
|
The article doesn't say whether or not they were sold by Glock, or if they were sold to a big time Arms dealer and then sold to Iran. Not to mention, look at how many AK 'ophiles we have on the board. Fact of the matter is, I've yet to find another handgun anywhere that works for me as well as a Glock. So I'll keep shooting mine, I'll keep buying mags for it, and I'll probably buy new ones in the future. Just the same way I'll probably be getting an AK soon. Commies killed a few more Americans than terrorists have. Just a few though
|
What point would it make selling it/them to another person? I don't see why that should cost him half his ass. I have a few Glocks. I am pissed at them, it is a moral position that Glock should take. I would have a hard time justifying buying another Glock. I like to avoid saying "never" but unlikely works. Good Luck Bill |
Bill, my point is moral convictions and positions. 109 strikes me as one of those who would advocate not buying Glocks but still shoot his on a regular basis, or sell them. That, in my book, is a half assed moral conviction. |

Jaenner the supply of 30.000 pistols of the company Glock to the Iraqi ministry of the Interior approves. How the daily paper "Austria" continues to report in its expenditure for Saturday, the Green delegate Peter Pilz sees therein a "new scandal around Austrian weapons in the Iraq". Beard stone approved the supply against doubts of its officials. Pistols at the black market would land again and again, also commit the Iraqi police violations of human rights. According to mushroom permission was the "success of a political intervention with beard stone". Three of four approves In the restaurant economics it meant in addition, those Iraqi authorities would have sufficiently documented that the weapons are not passed on. It has altogether four requests given, by which three were approved, said the responsible department chief opposite the Oe1-Abendjournal. Not approved a supply is to the US army in the Iraq. This did not want to give this warranty. Besides in the Ministry of Economic Affairs it was stressed that the pistols intended for the police are not subject to the war material law. On Tuesday the British newspaper "The had reported to DAILY telegraph", with Aufstaendi rifles of the Austrian weapon manufacturer Steyr Mannlicher would have found US troops, which had been sold before approximately two years to Iran. The new owner of Steyr Mannlicher, Franz holzschuh, assumed opposite the APA it concerns thereby reproductions. (APA) |

Yep - the destination of the 30.000 pistols is Iraq's police, not a single doubt about that!!! And due to our crazy export law, which generally okays supplying to police (that is how the Steyr. 50 got to Irans border patrol) but not for military use, a request by US forces had supposedly been turned down. |
I don't even think the desert is dry enough to keep a sig from rusting itself shut...

Its a moot point now due to the error of the AP (which is now in my original post), but you have made assumptions about me that are not true. While I own and shoot Glocks from time to time, I am a 1911 fanatic. My post was not intended to be anything other than pointing out what looked to be a VERY bad decision by Glock and one that would affect my future purchases had the information been true. |
109, I'd say you raised the flag of patriotism, not under the pretense of right or wrong, but wanting to be the pivot point and center for a flare up of rhetorical patriotism. What 308Sako posted is REAL AMERICAN PATRIOTISM. You wouldn't understand that because you probably drive a Toyota or Lexus, have an illegal Mexican mow your yard, and buy lots of Chinese goods at Walmart. Sorry, but you reek of sunshine patriotism and tree hugging idealism rolled into one! ![]() |
Don't tell me what my pretense was. "Real" American patriotism is not for you to judge when it comes to people you don't know. If you want to sit down over a beer and discuss things such as "original intent", capitalism, socialism, monetary policy, immigration policy, efftect of balance of trade, energy policy, environmentalism, unintended consequences, market forces and a few other topics, we can do that. if, after that you want to accuse me of "sunshine patriotism" and tree hugging idealism (god that makes me laugh), you can have at it. Until then, I would invite you to STFU. |
|
109, so you do drive an import, use illegal Mexicans to mow your lawn, and buy Chinese goods at Walmart!!!!!!!! Sorry, but I don't drink beer with idealistic yuppies who call for unrealistic boycotts of European firearms when they drive Japanese vehicles! Chill out, sit back, and enjoy your Perrier and lemon this evening! Contemplate world affairs from your recliner and reflect on how you've made an ass of yourself with this thread! ![]() STFU indeed!
