This weekend my uncle is taking me pistol shooting for the first time.  HE has a Beretta 9mm and a old Springfield 9mm.  Anyone used these two before?  Was it reliable, any malfunctions, amount of recoil?  Any imput would be great.

Sounds like a fun weekend ahead.
If both the Beretta and Springfield are maintained there should be no reliability problems.
I would guess the Springfield would recoil less due to the steel frames weight, compared to Beretta's alloy frame.
The 9MM should be no problem recoil wise in either, noise on the other hand could be so find some ear protection.
And of course, safety/shooting glasses should be worn.
Be safe, have fun!

I have a Beretta 92fs, which is what I assume your uncle has. In my experience mine has been extremely reliable with good magazines-Beretta or Asian Military although I have had surprsingly good luck with crumby USA mags. It is a heavy gun for 9mm and will recoil little.

The main difference between the two is the Beretta fires the first round with a long double action pull, after that it will have a lighter single action pull; I would guess your uncle's Springfield is a single action pistol. If so it's pull will be the same on each shot and the first shot will be easier and probably more likely to be in the same area with all the other shots you fire.

When shooting a pistol (or other iron sighted guns) your eye can only focus on one thing but you have to see the rear sight, front sight and the target. focus on the front sight and try to keep the top of the front leve with the top of the rear sight and try to keep the front sight centered the same way in the rear sight. Consistency is the key. Do this and you will be far ahead of many shooters I have seen who have owned pistols for a long long time (and some of whom carry them for a living).

Have fun, sounds like your uncle is pretty cool.

Springfield used to make/import the P9, a CZ-type 9mm semi. Slow sales made them drop it from their line, IIRC. It had a bit of a heavy trigger, I have no idea as to its accuracy.

I own a SA 1911 9mm, single stack mag. Gets lots of looks at the range.
