I've always wanted an original 1911 pistol from WWII! Who hasn't, right!!

Well I've been trying to decide what to get.
I've heard that Colt has really went down hill with their new version the 1991A1. So I thought I'd turn to Springfield and get the Mil-Spec version, I like it (except for the grips).  I know Kimber is in the running, but I just want something that looks like the original and I want something reliable without having to make alot of modifications.

Plus I don't want to spend alot of $$$$, that's why I'm not going to even try to find an original from the war.

All information would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

They look pretty good and used to be fairly cheap.  I bought an auto ordnance a few years ago before Kahr bought them and it was a fantastic 1911  I think I paid $290 for it brand new.  I'm sure they have went up since though.

I've thought about the Auto-Ordnance, but I'm not that cheap!!

I do want a quality gun that I can count on, if the Auto-Ordnance is a quality gun then that's fine, but I'm leaning heavily toward the Springfield Mil-Spec unless someone can change my mind

I believe Springfield frames are cast while Colts are forged.  I don not think you would go wrong with either.

Is $700 too much to spend on a good GI 1911?  I've seen similar deals on arsenal-refinished 1911's and -A1's on gunbroker and at gun shows in the past.

If you're looking to stay cheaper than that, there are still a few Norinco's showing up sporadically on gunbroker, in the $400 ballpark.  You can also find good deal on Argentine issued 1911's in the $300's at www.cruffler.com.

depends, Do you want one that will be there for you when you need it? Or just a 45 to shoot.
KIMBER this one word says it all, right out of the box it will take care of your ass. If you want a piece that is going to used for self defense, I just don't see how a dollor figure can even come into play. as for a plinker sure go with auto ord., norinco, or for that matter even a new colt will give you lots of jam clearing action.

Laugh if you will, but back in the day, I bought a Norinco "model of the 1911a1" for some reason.  To this day I like it better than my Springfields, although my Defender has become my favorite.  Just something about it I guess, reliable as hell and doesn't even look to bad.  As I remember they were pretty cheap back then.

You can't go wrong with either a Kimber or Springfield. There are others out there that are just as nice, but it's a crap shoot.

I agree you cant go wrong with a Springfield or a Kimber. I have a mil-spec Springfield and a Kimber Target Eclipse. I have no complaints about either of them.

If you want to spend the $$$ Colt now has a genuine M1911A-1 for sale again, without the series 70 / 80 / 90 crap on it. VERY nice pistol, but something like $700-800. Personally, I'd probably go with the Springfield.
