Im a weekend shooter with a low budget. This will be my first pistol and due to the awesomeness and good reputation of the 1911, I think I want one.

Im on a $1000 budget and I need to get some ammunition as well. I want to buy ammo bulk so Im thinking of getting 1000 at at a time.

I want something reliable, fun, upgradeable and awesome looking. Preferably black.

What would you recommend for a $750 1911?

Also, ammo recommendations?

Thanks,
Coby

I've heard good things about Rock Island. $399 I think. Spend the rest on ammo.

Start looking for a used Springfield Loaded.

As an owner of a GI / WW II Springfield, I'd say Springfield 1911.

I've had no problems with mine, and mine is one of, if not THE, lowest priced pistol Springfield has or HAD when I purchased mine.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating purchasing one of Springfield's cheapest pistols, just that I have had no issues with mine.

More money left over after purchase allows more to be spent on ammo to practice with.

Oh, the GI / WW II pistol is definitely a base gun that can be upgraded.

I've gotta recommend the Mil-Spec or used Series 70 Colt. For ammo, any you can get your hands on. I don't usually use aluminum case or Wolf ammo.

I have seen new Colt Series 70 reproduction models sell for 749.00 at local gun shows and in stores.

If I were you I would either get a Springfield or a Colt. Personally I would rather own an American made Colt over a Brazilian made Springfield but the odds are you can find a Springfield, GI or Milspec for close to $200 less than the Colt.

As far as quality goes there is nothing wrong with either.

Taurus PT1911 its under $600. I have put over 1,500 rounds in mine and have not had any failures and it's dead on accurate right out of the box. Plus the fit and finish on mine is perfect.

find a used unmolested 1991 series colt- usually in the 500 buck range in my area and spend the rest of the grand on ammo and extra magazines-do not skimp on magazines- wilson 47's or tripp research- figure an extra 6 mags is going to run you 150 bucks or more- but a bad magazine or cheap mags will give you no end of headaches

Of those I would pick the STI.  I have a Spartan and a Trojan and they have both been terrific.  I would buy another without hesitation.

both good choices...........American Classics and Legacy Citadels are also nice weapons...........the Springfeild Mil-spec is  a solid weapon but I dont like mil-spec sites. The previous 4 choices give you good sites with  a "novak" cut already there. Any  FMJ ammo you can get for under $20 per 50 is a decent deal(except the steel case stuff).  I didnt know there was a problem with the aluminum(Blazer/CCI) other than not being reloadable?

+1 for the springfield
+1 for the taurus
+1 for the reloading equip
I'm comfortable with a springfield 1911 mil-spec. Thats what I bought (used), carry, and my families life depends on.
I don't feel bad when it scratches on the seat belt, or I sit on it, or it gets back sweat on it. I'm not a fan of safe queens.
I take care of it, but I don't baby it, by any means.
I Check gunbroker, and check  the EE here.
Here's a couple examples on GB.

Be careful. Some dealers say mil spec and it's not.
If I had to do it again, I would.

I'll add my opinion.  It'll cost you a good couple hundred bucks for a case of .45 and you will need to spend at least $60 for a decent holster.  Then you'll need to spend $100 for some good magazines.  So at that point all you really have left is $500, with that as my limit you only really have two choices, Rock Island Armory or Springfield Mil-spec.  Of those, I'd get the mil-spec. If you can stretch the budget a bit, a used Colt, Kimber Custom II or Springfield Loaded or a new STI Spartan would be hard to pick between.  I wouldn't even look at Taurus.

Out of those guns, you really can't go wrong.

Why no taurus? I'm not badgering you, I'm just curious.
Bad experience?
Also, the springfields usually come with 2 mags, and a carry kit. Not that it's worth a damn, but
you could use it till you get one you really like. When funds permit.

My best advice would be to rent all 3. Same day, same session.
My range will rent you one free if you buy enough ammo. Or ten bucks per gun for an hour.
30 bucks could save you a 500-700 dollar mistake.

I've seen a lot of Taurus's in my day, my Dad uesd to love them.  I think they are piles of crap.  I prefer a piece that is properly manufactured to a piece that has all the bells and whistles but questionable assembly.  A good SA Mil-spec will be more reliable and a better manufactured gun in the long run compared to a Taurus, but that is just my opinion.

And quite frankly, there are just too many good 1911 builders out there that can provide a good pistol for $600-$700 that have reputations for making excellent weapons, Springfield, RIA, Colt, STI, and Kimber are just a few that come to mind.

The 2 magazines that come with SA work fine, I like to have a couple extra though as magazines can go bad or produce issues.  The holster that SA provides with their package is a piece of shit.  I'd rather have a cheap Mike's Tactical full size holster for $20 over that thing, and you could get a SERPA for $45 or a decent Galco for $65...so I'd go ahead and buy some Wilson mags and a decent holster from the get-go.

The range idea is good, it's how I have picked most the pistols I've owned over the years.  Just be careful, a pistol at the range might work great for the 50 rounds you shoot, but you have to keep in mind the long term effectiveness of the pistol.

I had a Taurus for a while.......it was my first 1911 and the gun that started my insane addiction to the platform.  (Now I am up to 7).

I ended up trading my Taurus in towards the purchase of a Springer Mil-Spec.  Don't get me wrong the Taurus shot good and had a good feel to it....I just couldn't get past the fact that it was a Taurus.  The reputation of Taurus making poor products just kind of put a Stigma on it for me.

I never personally experienced any problems with mine though.  However I would much rather buy a reputable brand 1911.

Since this is your first pistol, try to find a nice used Colt.  Do it right the first time.
