So I'm REALLY new to the 1911 platform.  I've never actually built my own firearms.  I've always just purchased finished products.  I have a nice Taurus PT92, but having recently picked up a new doublestar ar15...I was looking at something sleek to go in the case with it.  I've always liked to 1911 style...and it was a hard decision between a 1911 and a 92 when I decided on the Taurus.  I don't think I want another Taurus...not because I don't like the Taurus.  The Taurus has been a great pistol.  But I like variety in my collection.  In other words, I just want to try out the other names in the firearms industry.

I've also always wanted to build my own firearm...of some sort.  I just think that would be a nice feeling, once the finished product is complete.  Plus I would like to customize the look just a bit.  Anyway, I noticed dpms has a 1911 kit, in 3 kits actually:  parts kit, frame, and slide kits.  Does anybody know anything about these?  How hard would this be for a first timer to put together, and what kind of pistol would I have when finished?

Does anybody have any other suggestions as to companies with good "kits" to begin with?  Or should I just go out and get a Springfield mil-spec, and customize from there?  haha

Sorry, I guess I asked a stupid question.  What about building from rock river arms parts?  Anybody ever done it?  Anybody have any opinions?

Here's a site of mine detailing a few builds.  Mine were on 80% frames, but you can just skip those parts.

I've built a few pistols - - with Rock River parts - .

The frames are a bit expensive, but one of the best on the market.  Everything is oversized so hand fitting on most parts is needed.

I will check this thread sometime when I have a little more time and post more.

Take care,
Bob
