I just got an e-mail from Brownells and they have an STI 2011 Slide and Frame Kit for sale. I am not a gunsmith, but I thought it might be an interesting project to try and build the rest. Would a project like this require gunsmithing skills to get everything else to fit and work well or would I just be better off spending about $2000 and getting a gun from STI? Thanks in advance for any input! I posted this on the Brian Enos forum and most suggested spending the $2000 for a custom STI with various custom gunsmith vendors specializing in STi's. |

The hard part can be the slide to frame fit and fitting the barrel and bushing to the fitted slide and frame. After that the rest only takes good hand tool skills and patience. If you got someone to fit the slide an dframe nicely, an dpurchased a Kart EZ fit barrel you should be good to go if you are handy with tools. I don't know that I would make a wide body my first build though because some of the parts are specialized and if you screw them up they can be more expensive to replace. |

Quoted: The only STI widebody proprietary parts are the frame, trigger, mag release, magazine, and mainspring housing. The only part you'll really mess with is the frame, and that is still something expensive to replace even with a single stack. And you shouldn't need to do much to the frame if the slide is already fitted with the kit.I don't know that I would make a wide body my first build though because some of the parts are specialized and if you screw them up they can be more expensive to replace. |
| I don't know much, but look up Gander Mountain Hermantown MN. Call the gunsmith and see if Joe Boon is in. He used to work for STI and will give you a no BS answer on what he thinks will work and what's required on your part to put something like that together. |

Thanks for all of the feedback. I will definitely give Joe Boon a call. It sounds like the frame is already fit to slide, but fitting the barrel/bushing to the slide may take skills that I don't have. In addition, I need to look at the cost of the tools needed. I may be biting off more than I can chew for my first 1911/2011 build, but I am in no rush and I might learn alot (read that spend alot) in the process. I appreciate all of your feedback!
I did check out the Dawson and Brazos websites and it looks like they do some very nice work! |
