Could someone explain the concept of a Bull Barrel in the 1911?

1) What's the advantage or disadvantage of a Bull Barrel?  Would it be appropriate in a 9mm 1911?

2) What is required to install a bull barrel in a 1911 that was originally set up in a standard bushing format?

I'm interested in an extended and threaded barrel for a 5" 9mm 1911 and they offer the least expensive option that is of any quality.

Bull Barrels add weight at the muzzle helping with recoil/muzzle flip control.  Do they improve function?  Probably not.  That's not to say there's a problem with them.  Rather, if a barrel is fit right (standard, bull or otherwise) the pistol will function.

For a 9mm pistol, it's personal preference.  I have a 9mm single stack 1911 for plinkin' and carry and it's got a standard barrel w/ bushing in it.  It's cool, but I had it built 'cause I didn't own a 9mm pistol.  My carry gun is a STI 2011 (1911 variant) chambered in .38 Super (long 9mm) and it has a bull barrel (4.5").  Why?  Lots of bullets (22+1) that penetrate.  It's accurate as hell and reliable as can be.

As for having an "extended and threaded" version, that not too difficult.  Just remember that factory barrels w/ threads are usually set up for compensators and not supressors (different thread pattern).

Thanks.

Now that you mention it, I went back to KKM's website and it indicates that it is the wrong thread pattern.  There are plenty of other options out there, and I could probably have KKM do a custom job for me on an extended standard barrel.  So I guess there's no longer any reason to worry about a bull barrel.

Much appreciated.
