I have a mag full of factory Winchester .45 ACP jacketed hollow point for my Springfield 1911 that has been around for several months at least.  Tonight I cycled a round into the chamber and out again.  As usual, I inspected it before putting it back in the mag.  It looked a bit stubby so I compared it to the other rounds and sure enough the bullet is set back about 1mm into the casing.  Thumb pressure will not budge it.  It has been chambered at least once, probably more than once.

I would not use this setback round for defense, but is it safe to fire it at the range?  Or should I discard it?

1mm would be about 40 thousandths of an inch, probably still safe, but why chance it?

If you reload, just knock the bullet out of the case a bit with an impact puller and re-crimp it.

I would shoot it.. in fact I've done so to discard rounds like that.  No real biggie.  Now if it's really pushed back in there I throw it away, but just a little is no big deal in my experience.

Thanks.
I think I'll just shoot it.

Greetings, Gents:  Just a word of caution, if the bullet is set too far back in the case, and only Lord knows what is too far, a catastrophic event can occur.

I listened, intently, as a previous, proud owner of a Les Baer Premium 1911, with his slide gone North and his rosewood grips panels, each gone  East and West, respectively.  His Dillion progressive reloader and his attentive reloading technique, notwithstanding, blamed the manufacturer of the pistol for his woes. This particular soul still has more Dollars than Sense.  Regards
