I am a rifle guy, looking to buy my first pistol and have decided on CZ. I really like the idea of the SP-01, the all steel frame one, i believe is the Tactical. The gun will only be used for home defense and range.
Are there any downsides to this model? I am slightly confused with the whole decocker thing, maybe someone can explain it to me, the only handgun ive shot is a beretta 92F. Also - is there a major accuracy difference between the P-01 and the SP-01 given the barrel length? Availability seems to be an issue with the SP-01, everyone keeps telling me to jsut get a 75B and be done with it. Thanks for any insight |

If it were JUST a range gun, I would agree with the masses and say get a 75b.
However, the rail is a necessity for a light IMO. in a home defense weapon. The P-01 is a compact and is inherently going to be hard(er) to handle, but much better than your average polymer pistol thanks to the weight. You can buy an SP-01 with a safety instead of a decocker. It has a nicer trigger pull and I prefer that system anyways. With a decocker, you chamber a round and then depress the decocker, which lowers the hammer without allowing it to touch the firing pin. SO now you have a loaded round and are in double action mode, which requires a long trigger pull. However, with the safety model, you can either go around in condition 1 with the safety on, OR you can manually lower the hammer (which won't touch the firing pin if you release the trigger after the sear breaks) and then go in DA mode. |

My guess about people telling you to just get a 75B would be that their reasoning is that it is the same base gun and is quite a bit cheaper.
The SP01 is a great gun and will do whatever you need it to do. They are very popular for IPSC shooting and shoot very well. It was more of a purpose built pistol and they hit a homerun. As far as the decocker goes its function is exactly what it sounds like. When you are done shooting you hit the decocker and it safely drops the hammer on the round on the chamber. Your first shot is double action and then single after you fire. Does that make sense? I thought thought the 92's could use the safety to decock ut it has been so long since I shot one I cant remember. |

Ghostholster.com should have them for sale. The SP01 has a safety, the Tactical model is the one with a decocker. They are very nice guns. The difference between the SP01 and 75B is the shape and material of the frame, as well as the slide. The barrel and internals are for all intents and purposes the same. The frame and slide are made with more modern and better quality steel, and the frame was re contoured for better ergonomics, and to include the full length dustcover with rail. The ability to add a light to the gun makes it much better for home defense I believe.
In your case, I'd suggest the .40SW version of the gun, since you are hampered by NY magazine capacity restrictions. Might as well be shooting bigger bullets. |

The standard SP01 has the safety, as has already been mentioned. It also comes with tritium sights. Mine was here less than a week after I ordered it from my dealer.
I just got my SP01 last week, and I strongly suggest giving any you plan to purchase a thorough once over before laying down your cash. Mine has literally the worst single action trigger pull I've EVER felt on a firearm. My wife's KelTec P11 has a better DA trigger. I haven't had any reliability problems with it, and I don't expect any. I need to call up CZ and see if they'll take it back for a warranty repair on the crappy trigger.

I've had a tactical (decocker, night sights) model for quite a while now and have had absolutely no issues at all. Trigger is smooth, no failures to feed or extract and much more accurate than I am.
It's my current night stand gun and took over that role from my P-01. The one advantage with the P-01 was the weight as compared to the SP-01. –– Mike |

wow! thats actually the first bad thing ive heard about the SP01... hmmmm yeah I hope i dont have the same issues. I found the problem a few minutes ago after doing some googling to find out how to get the thing completely apart. There was a monster burr/piece of leftover material on the right edge of the right hammer hook. I stoned that off and I'm working on stoning everything else to smooth out the roughness on other parts. I lost one spring(uber tiny), so I'll be calling CZ up first thing in the morning to order a new one. |

Angus rocks when it comes to CZ stuff.
I have played with both the decocker and the safety models..my personal preference is the safety model..only because the decocker is such a PITA to get completely apart.. if you are not doing that..both are great to shoot. my .40 SP01 is great with the little extra weight from the rail and I was able to get a nice trigger on it too. |
