I'm getti ready to send my MC Operator back to Springers custom shop for some "tweaks".  I cant decided if I want the front strap checkered or not?  I love my Pros front strap at 20 lpi, but if I do the front strap I think I will go 25 lpi's, BUT I sure like the old school Pachmyers on it now how it came.  I actually forgot how much I did like them when I ran them in the 80's.

25LPI handcut is awesome.

I like it, but I really don't know the reasons why you wouldn't get it done. It seems like it only helps, not hinders.

I don't know. If you keep the Pachmyers you also run the risk, of over time, having rust collect between the front strap and grip. 25lpi would be very nice though, but if you plan on hard use the checkering will end up getting dinged. I personally think the Pachmyers kind of help make this gun. I’d keep the grips and just clean as needed to prevent unnecessary corrosion. I think the Operator is a neat, practical handgun and the current grips do add to that, they are functional, and not just cool looking.

I prefer 25 lpi on the front and 20 lpi serrations on the back.
It doesn't catch on my clothes and still provides plenty of traction.
I wold also recommend a high-cut near the trigger guard.

As far as it getting dinged up - well, that means you're using your gun a lot.

I don't really like it because it tears up my hands.

It dont know why it's necessary on 1911s. There are a lot of guns out there that recoil much harder than 1911s & nobody is lining up to get the front strap checkered on those. The checkering was originally put on custom guns to showcase the gunsmiths art. It's not needed although it does makes a great rust incubator.

If you are wanting to use the pachmayers I would say no. That would just be another place for dirt/dust/rust to collect.

+1
I use to use crimson trace lasergrips on my STAINLESS Colt XSE. I took them off once for a good, thorough cleaning only to find rust built up under the actuator on the frontsstap. Luckily I caught it early and probably could remove any trace of it if I were to have the pistol re-bead blasted.

A well-checkered frontstrap is one of the little pleasures of owning a nice 1911.

Why not cut the Pachmayrs apart so that you have the regular grip panels and the checkered front strap?

I'm a big fan of the Pachmayrs as well, but I do like checkered front straps, as a matter of fact, I even prefer the "DNA sampler" 20 LPI to 25 or 30 LPI checkering.  The Pachmayr wraparounds feel great, too, though, and IMHO, they look pretty nice, too, especially on a clean front strap.  If you choose not to cut the Pachmayrs, a nice set of Miltac G10 or Simonich Gunners (the real kind) would go great with front strap checkering, too.

This is exactly how my 1911 is set up right now and I love it.

25 lpi feels about right.  Not too dense (limited grip).  Not too loose (digs into hand).

That being said, stippling gives the best grip I've felt on a 1911 but it isn't as classy.

None of my many Colts have it and I don't see any real need. YMMV

Throw some skateboard grip tape on there for a while and see if you like the traction...it's about the same grit, costs near nothing, and is not permanent.

This.

I did that on one of my 1911s just to see if I would like it and I didn't.

Meh... do it yourself!  Buy the files, I have one of the oldstyle Marvel checkering guides I'll loan ya.  And no, I've never used it.

Good one...But, the Operator does have a certain look and feel, that helps make it an Operator and the current grips are part of that. That being said checkering sure is nice. As someone else mentioned the Original Gunners do, do their job! I have a set and there really is no need for checkering with them installed. In the end it is your gun do what you want and make yourself happy.

Back in the day, I shot in A LOT of matches. Mostly IPSC Limited and Steel Challenge. Coupled with about 500 rounds a week in practice, well, you get the idea, quite a bit of mileage on the Government model. I tried the skate board tape, thinking I might want to checker eventually, but it tore the palm of my right hand up. The effect of thousands of rounds and the grip frame sandpapering the hand was a no go. It also impeded my draw sometimes, "sticking" my hand to the grip frame and not allowing me to shift to a proper hand hold. Even though technique is key, sometimes I just screw up when drawing the pistol, and a smooth frontstrap allows a correction before I launch the bullet. My 2cents

I don't want checkering.

It makes it too hard to change my grip if I didn't get it right as it came out of the holster.
