Any benefit to it? Or is it mainly for looks?

For me, I can't shoot a 1911 without front strap checkering or at the very least skateboard tape.  I need the secure grip that the checkering gives and all of my 1911s
have either checkering or the Wilson slip on frontstrap.

Maybe its just me but a 1911 with a smooth front strap squirms around way too much.

It's for a secure grip.

I don't have it (or feel I need it) on any of my 1911s but I am not known for "tacticool."
I'm not saying others may want and need it as it's just another choice.

its a benefit for me (looks good too imo, but thats subjective) for improved gripping over shots/time

for me, i prefer to have some stippling up fronts and sides and backstraps on HGs, 1911s no exceptions

30LPI is pretty fine and secure enough; i'd have to agree that 25 is the best

I've had them both ways and much prefer the feel of a checkeded front strap.  Personally, I prefer the looks of a smooth strap, it reminds me of the original 1911's and 1911A1's.

Maybe this won't matter you you, but I prefer the feel of the checkering on a blued or parkerized gun over checkering on a "painted" gun.  It feels grippier to me.

I've got a good mix of both checkered and non-checkered front strap 1911s.  I shoot both equally well and really couldn't care less.  Sometimes the smooth strap feels better since it tears up my hand less.

Are you serious?  I never even heard it remotely suggested that checkering was a decorative modification.

Definitely a plus.  Get some.

The checkering is great, especially when your hands get all sweaty.  I have 20 lpi on mine and love it.

i must have some sort of texture on a front strap. If you have ever shot with sweaty, wet bloody etc hands you will understand. There is an easy fix if the gun does not have it though. a small piece of 3m grip tape on the front strap. I put a piece on my para LTC and it's lasted almost a year before i changed it for a new piece.

If i got something, id just get it cut, i dunno about tape, it just seems, cheap. I want horizontal lines like the front strap on my sig p226 has.

To each his own. My 1911 is a tool not art work. If you plan on having your frame cut look for a steel frame and expect to have it refinished as well.

Yeah, its a steel frame. But the tape seems interesting, due to the fact that i have a coated frame (OD green)

I love gun snobbery. It is so entertaining and keeps gunsmiths gainfully employed.

I have a gunsmith that would do it for cheap. But after paying 1100 for the gun, useing 5 dollar tape, just doenst seem right..even though i do shoot wolf for practice ammo.

On the other hand maybe you're just a cheap bastard.

easy ladies... sorry i brought up the 3M tape.

I don't think it looks "cheap" just practical. YMMV

I like grip tape. It does provide a nice secure anchor, and should I ever tire of it...

For me, it really helps.
I refuse to put skateboard tape on a 1911

But that's just me, YMMV.

Checkered front strap for me.  I've also tried skate board tape and the thin metal thing from brownell's, both are tough on your hands.  My Kimber checkering isn't that rough, could have something to do with the lines per inch.
