I'm in the process of designing a 5" build for a carry piece and one of the foremost items at the top of the list is some sort of "stiction" on the frontstrap with corresponding work on an arched MSH.
I've used checkering and tape before, but I'm interested in the new breed of scallops, snakeskin, conamyds and golf balling. If any of you have pics and/or info on this matter, post those pics and give the credit to whomever did the work. My experience has been with Novak's, Springfield's Custom Shop and local gunsmith's for checkering thus far.

I've done the obligatory searching on forums and 'smith sites, but there's nothing like direct feedback.

Thanks in advance.

IMO, Checkering is the best, and will always be so.  If you your biggest reason for staying away from checkering is cost, go with machine cut checkering and skip the art of nicely done hand checkering.

All of the other machined surfaces are OK... some better than others.  IMO, Coneamyds grab the best, closely followed by Golfballs.  The scallops and snakeskin are OK.  All of these surfaces are easier to execute than hand cut checkering, so it's not unreasonable for a 'smith to push them.  If you just want the 'cool looking' factor, OK.. I can understand that.

Now, from a practical standpoint, checkering is not SIGNIFICANTLY stickier than any of these other treatments.  But, then again, skateboard tape isn't significantly different either.

I've grown on the Ed Brown snake skin/scallops/whatever on their Kobra Carry.  It seems to provide great grip (from my finger f'ing it in the store) but doesn't eat into the hand very hard.

Check out Miller Custom's double golfballing (he has a term for it) as it is pretty neat too.  I'd love to find someone with conamyds locally to see how they feel.

You can also check out the LTW forums for lots of varying pics.
