What I would really like is the Wilson Protector Compact, but can't justify $4k. So I'm thinking about sending it through the custom shop, but am novice enough that I don't know enough to pick out cost effective upgrades. I know I would like a beveled mag well, front grip checkering, and fiber optic front sight. Past that list is there anything I should invest in? I really like the Wilson's cone barrel, but I know that's just for cosmetics.

Do y I u find it to be rough on the edges for carry? How's the trigger? Has it been reliable? Comfortable thumb safety? Rear sight? Re-finish after checkering etc?

The cone, or bull barrels in compact 1911's are not just for "cosmetics". They eliminate the bushing allowing the slide to travel further to the rear enhancing reliability.

Clearly I still have more to learn. So if I order through the custom shop what should I invest in, any parts that should be upgraded?

Contact the Colt Custom Shop and ask questions. They'll help you sort out the options you want.
