Ok, let me preface this by saying that I am relatively new to 1911's.

The Ice Cream truck that usually sells guns in my neighborhood had what I considered a sweet looking Commander Lightweight for sale.  Felt good in the hand and I'm considering picking one up for a CCW.  However, I personally think they were asking too much for it ($850 used), so I may employ other sources for the aquisition, but that's not important to the question.

Anyway, as mentioned above, am new to the 1911 family so my question is... is the Lightweight Commander 45 a good buy for the money in that price range or would I be better  served to look at a different model, manufacturer, etc. for function, reliability, looks and cost?  Looking in the $800-900 range and I can get the dealer pricing if I go with a NIB pistol.  The Kimbers look really nice too and I've heard good things about them, and the Springfields and others... just too many choices when I'm not familiar with all the options and selections.

I prefer to go with the 4" if possible and like the stainless and or brushed look as opposed to blued.  (They're all beautiful, just my personal preferance).

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry if I was rambling, just excited about the idea of finally owning a 1911.

The alloy framed Commanders carry easy but shoot hard do to the light weight. The Combat Commannder's carry a little heavier but are much more enjoyable to shoot.

Having said that you can pick up a NEW Commander XSE or Combat Commander XSE in the $850 range.

Thanks SGB, was definitely curious about the recoil factor on that alloy frame.  Maybe I should try something else.

So what would be the best 1911 in that price range?  I know that is a REALLY subjective question but...is there one out there that the majority of you guys would say "If I had $850 to spend on a 1911, this is what I'd get" ?

Or should I be looking in the $600-$700 range and spend the balance on mags, custom grips, etc.?

Sorry for such newb questions.  I know that this has got to be akin to asking which AR should I get a Bushmaster or Rock River, M-4 or 20".  But I  would like something that is light enough weight and in 4" for carrying and the best gun for the money.  If thats the Combat Commander, so be it.  If there are other options that would be just as good for less $, cool.  Just don't want to get something and have someone say, "Man, for that price you could have had XYZ if you would have asked around a little more."  Know what I mean?

My pick in the 4 inch catagory would be a Colt Combat Commander XSE

SGB, is correct the colt is nice, but i hate those front serration's,  i just picked up a new Dan wesson CBOB, its very nice. i dont really like the 4 inch models. i want a true commander size, 4.25  if work wasn't so crazy i would say your more than welcome to shoot the Dan Wesson. i didn't like my Springfield loaded light weight i had, but Jeff liked it he thought it carried well.  might shoot Mike and Kerry a email there very strong options on 1911. i am pretty simple. i want a 4.25 barrel and i want a gi guide rod and button not a bull barrel thats all i want.

the colt, is very nice but i haven't seen any in our area.  i know gaf's in mexico has the CZ, thats were i got mine.

If you carry the gun much, you'll definitely appreciate the alloy frame.  It jumps around a little bit more than a steel Government profile gun, but it isn't painful by any stretch of the imagination.

Thanks again SGB and Ron.

When I was referring to 4"  I did mean 4.25.  I'm an estimator, lol, I round things.  Guess I need to be careful about that with barrel length.

Probably will give Mike and Kerry a shout.  Hell, maybe they have one laying around that I could try out.

The front serrations don't bother me as far as looks so unless I get distracted by something else shiny, looks like it will probably be the Combat Commander.

As a side note, now I just have to find a home for the wife's G26, she fired it once (and I put  4 mags through it)  and said, "you can go ahead and trade this in on a 1911 if you want.  I don't like it."

She did at least like the P22 that I had gotten her so it wasn't a total loss.

ETA, Damn that one is sexy too Ron.

What i need is every 1911 laid out on a table for my testing so I can make my decision.
