Colt 1991A1 Compact 45 Auto
This is my bedside piece. This has not been fired it a lot because I heard the springs do not last long and the lug of the recoil plug will wear off and the spring goes booing! Thinking of carrying, so this rascal should get more handling and rounds fired and we do not want any failures. Am I being too cautious? |

The springs WILL wear out faster, but those are components like tires and lightbulbs... made to be replaced with use. Considering the options of spending $7.95 every 750-1,000 rounds (as opposed to every 3,000 on a 5" 1911) versus saving the loot by never shooting it only to find you are inexperienced or yours has some reliability hangup at the most crucial moment in life, it seems to me what the obvious choice is.
Yes, if your Colt has the tab in the spring plug, there have been reports of breakage issues, but I know at least one company makes a reverse plug that bypasses that tab for worry free shooting. Your familiarity and experience with the platform in the nightstand is far, far more important than babying it. |

Nothing wrong with a little caution. Seeing as it is your bedside weapon, and you are thinking about carrying it, I humbly recommend purchasing new recoil and firing pin springs from Wolff. The product is top notch and will cost you very little.
From there, take it to the range to make sure it runs fine. And get some quality aftermarket mags for it if you haven't already. |
