This happened while firing at target practice. The slide, instead of recoiling backwards, went forward almost hanging of lower. The slide lock was missing. I finally found it in the weeds.  The slide stop was broken. Repair was a simple, Sarco online order. See pic for broken lock piece. Broken lock on left.

That's interesting.

Pretty low stress area where it broke. I wonder if rounds were impacting it on the way to the chamber

Yes interesting. Their must have been a crack or defect. It was probably there for a long time.

Colt has a recall for some heat treating problems on a few of their models.

I do believe one of the parts with poor heat treating was the slide lock.

Check their site to see if your serial number falls within the ranges given.

The pistol is a 30 year old Colt Mfg 80 series Govt model. Its had several K of ammo through it. But it is still in excellent condition. Just one of those things I guess.

That's not the first time a slide stop has broken, I not saying that Colt is using mim parts but some companies do.

I replaced the slide stop in my ccw with a Wilson Bullet Proof which is made from bar stock.  I might never have broken the oem, but on the flip side the Wilson is less likely to ever break.

To me it was cheap insurance.

Having the Colt slide stop lug break off is actually fairly common, according to Chuck Rogers.  I've seen a couple myself but nowhere as many as he has.

This.

I'd go ahead and replace the Sarco part with Wilson

Or an EGW.  I read Sarco and figured he likes broke slide stops.

I'm just fine with the Sarco part. I don't care if you like it or not.

I'm cool with it too.
