I have a series 80 Colt Commander. Haven't done anything to it, bought brand new, about 500 rounds down the pipe. This thing can't group for crap. I know it isn't me cause all my other pistols group very well and other guys that have shot this thing say how crappy it is.

What gives? Or is there something I should do to it?

Colt is known for reliability. Other than that, EVERYTHING  else (fit, finish, and accuracy come to mind) varies from pistol to pistol. The good news is that it is treatable (double check the sights, and look into a match grade bushing, and possibly a barrel).

Is it a 1991 in 45 acp?  38 Super?

What do you call grouping well and at what yardage?

What ammo?

How loose is the barrel bushing?  I have had several Colts that had some slop in the barrel bushing.  How stiff is the trigger?

It is in .45 ACP, a call a passable group at 10 yards the size of my fist. This Colt sometimes can do it, sometimes not.

Any and all ammo, doesn't matter what I feed it. Barrel bushing seems tight, what's the tolerance as a general rule?

Have you tried to benchrest it on some sandbags?

After trying that ?

Barrel lugs not cut right
Barrel bushing
Link wrong length
Really bad barrel crown

Well, shooting off hand with a new gun, fist size group at 10 yards or so is not the worst.

ok, gun unloaded, slide in battery, take your thumb and push down on the barrel hood through the ejection port. If it moves up and down without moving the slide, then the slop in in the bottom lugs of the barrel.

Field strip the gun and slide the bushing on the barrel just on the muzzel (again as if the gun was in battery).  is there much play between the bushing and barrel?  If so, get a new bushing.

now take the bushing off and install it on the slide without the barrel.  Does the bushing move around in the slide??  fit a new bushing.

I really doubt it is the barrel itself.  Colt barrels are known to be very good quality. I know Speer (at least used to) uses a production Colt barrel for testing.  most smiths with just weld up the feet on a Colt barrel and refit.

Good luck

iff you measured the od of the barrel in the location of the bushing, you can a bushing cut to your size from EGW and proberly a few other places.
