Colt's Manufacturing Company LLC has determined that the Slide Lock Safety and the Recoil Spring Guide Pad in certain Colt model pistols were not manufactured to Colt specifications and must be replaced. Otherwise I can travel 5 miles to Midway's warehouse and replace with Ed Brown parts.http://s660.photobucket.com/albums/uu324/daclark1911/IMG_5448-1.jpg Apparently, they are only shipping parts on the Defenders, etc. Anything else would have to go back or you fix it on your dime. ![]() |

That picture thrown in is one effected by recall. Have many hours and the price of the gun again spent on dehorning, bluing and chain linking the front strap.. Can you imagine how long they could have it tied up ? The same is true of it's sibling that I carry sometimes.... My passion level runs a little higher than most I reckon.... The Colt pictured runs like a machine gun on greased rails.... Shipping just isn't an option.

I've already replaced the sub standard "slide lock safety" with a Wilson Combat part. I bought the gun second hand, and the previous owner had already replaced the part, I changed back to the Colt part, and after seeing where the plunger was wearing into the thumb safety , I switched back to the Wilson part. Works like a charm, and no wear after hundreds of engagements and disengagements to either the plunger or the safety.

I'm a curious kind of guy. Does Colt use Fedex, UPS or both? Anyone know? According to my reading of Colt's information it is Fed Ex door-to-door, delivered to a street address only (no PO box). The return "package" they will send you should include prepaid shipping label, box and shipping instructions. The box should include packing materials (peanuts) and the Fed Ex driver will schedule a time to pick it up at your home or business. This was the routine I went through with my Walther/S&W P22. Believe it or not I sent S&W the pistol on a Monday and it was returned, repaired, the following Thursday. They sent me a few new magazines for my trouble. Since Colt is doing a "CYA" to protect themselves legally they should absorb all the costs involved. The one exception to this logical principle of customer service was a Golani I had to send back to Century Arms. It had a bad habit of firing a round out of battery giving me and neighboring shooters a brass shower once. Century actually made me pay for sending a rather heavy rifle which was still under warranty. The "Service Manager" sounded like a meth lab reject and his "gunsmiths" were just plain stupid. If Colt doesn't cover the cost of everything just wait them out. It's their problem not yours. Your only issue will be selling the pistol at some future date if no service has been done. |

From http://www.coltsmfg.com/upload/pdfs/MasterRecallNotice.pdf FOR THE FOLLOWING MODELS: 1911 WWI REPLICA (O1911) 1918 WWI REPLICA (O1918) COMBAT ELITE (O8011XSE) NEW AGENT (O7810D) Contact Colt Customer Service for instructions on how to return the pistol to us and to obtain a mailing label so you can send it to us FREE OF CHARGE. Please provide us with your model and serial... They even agreed to additionally replace the spare recoil spring assembly I had purchased for my New Agent. That one will have to be sent separately, via USPS or FedEx, at my cost. Not a problem If all you need is the recoil assembly for your Defender, the .pdf I linked has contact info so you can have one sent to you, once you provide your model & serial no., and that can be done by email. |

So a replica of a gun that they started making during WW1 has been recalled? they have had how many years and still have not got it right? JK I just bought a Colt government and could not be happier! AP The parts in question were very likely made by a vendor. The vendor is normally in charge with the QC as Colt specifies it, it is the vendor's responsibility under contract to make sure that Colt can assemble guns from these parts with confidence. If it is indeed the vendor's problem, then the vendor gets what is called a "charge back"....in other words they can be liable for all costs incurred by Colt. |

If the industry really worked that way, there'd be no vendors. The risk of a recall for a bad part, which originally only cost .05, would outweigh any potential for profit. Most part suppliers limit their liability to the cost of the part they supplied. |

Thanks very much for your reply. You answered my question perfectly! Glad it's Fedex. I filled out the info. on the Colt website about my New Agent several days ago so I'll be looking the Fedex truck soon. |

Recalls are the plague of the small arms industry in the US. Ruger, Smith & Wesson and now Colt all have an ugly history of recalling due to poor quality control on a routine basis. Among foreign handgun makers (Beretta, H&K, CZ, Sig, Uberti, Star, Stoeger,FN come to mind) the only recall I can remember is Beretta's recall of the model 92 in the mid 1980s. It's a sad truth that Colt and the rest were once thought of as industry leaders. Now I almost anticipate my brand new thousand dollar US made firearm's recall; it's only a matter of time. Just send it back and they will eventually get it right.
How can they manage to make high quality firearms in places like Turkey while a legendary US company like Colt seems doomed to build things wrong? |

How can they manage to make high quality firearms in places like Turkey while a legendary US company like Colt seems doomed to build things wrong? Would you rather they do recalls and fix the problems or have them refuse to admit there is anything wrong with their product when something is wrong? EVERY company can have issues with their products, but few will admit to the public they have an issue as they don't want to look bad and they don't want to pay the extra money to fix something they already pocketed the money on. It's how they deal with those issues that make them a good or bad company to buy from. Most companies will deny, deny, deny any issue or even a rumor of an issue. With as many parts as there are on guns and as many factors involved that can affect the performace of a gun, it would be easy for a manufacturer to pawn off the blame when a customer as a malfunction. I'd rather deal with an American company doing a recall than a foreign company that probably doesn't have to follow US guidelines and run the risk of owning/using a product that should have been recalled but wasn't. |
|
Quoted: Exactly ! They should have ignored the problem and really pissed everyone off. Colt should have done nothing to correct a vendor supplied part failure even though they knew of it. I'm sure that nothing has ever gone wrong with any foreign weapon sold here since the dawn of time that warranted a recall except your example. The sad truth is that your comments border on nonsense. | I see threads every day on how people will only own a Colt 1911 or a Colt 6920 Ar, and everyone else's guns are a pos. It just goes to prove that everyone can have a problem once in a while, even colt. I'm sure that on average a Colt is just as good as anything else, maybe even better in some cases, but not all, like some people like to believe. |

I have to disagree about Colt owners in this forum assuming that "everyone elses' guns are pieces of s**t." I've never seen that kind of thread or attitude in this Colt sub-forum , the 1911 foru or the general handgun discussion. Why don't you post some of the threads you have in mind? And by the way, pavlovwolf, what 1911s do you own and enjoy? |

Before you return your recalled handgun by FedEx pay attention to the prepaid shipping label. Colt has agreed to insure it for a declared value of one hundred dollars. Note: firearms "missing during shipment" are not uncommon. It has happened to me. Fortunately Ruger simply paid me for a direct replacement.
When I called Colt and asked about the low declared value they were paying to insure their answer was 1.) "I don't know 2.) "these things are shipped all the time and are never lost; really almost NEVER" 3.) "I'll ask around and see if anyone around here knows". I was waiting for "the dog ate my homework" excuse that worked so well when I was in the third grade I'm just going to hang on to mine as a reminder to stay away from Colt's current products no matter how good they look. That doesn't include AR rifles. I have two Colt ARs, 9mm and 5.56, and they are great. Somebody at Colt must have accidentally built those guns the way it should be. |
|
Mine came in today with the same $100 declared value LOL I'll call tomorrow, but if thats all they're gonna do, I'll just keep it until they pony up the rest of the DV... it's their problem, it's their liability.
ETA: I"ve had a rifle lost on FedEx, luckily I had in insured for 500 more than it's value |

ETA: I"ve had a rifle lost on FedEx, luckily I had in insured for 500 more than it's value Maybe, just maybe, Colt could take the low road as usual; toss all the submitted recall guns into the trash and send each customer a hundred dollar check to cover their value as determined by Colt. It would top off a record of corporate stupidity and remove their substandard products from the market at the same time. Sam Colt, the 19th century industrial quality genius, must be spinning in his grave. |

My phone call from Colt today regarding the hundred dollar insured value they place on their 1911 handguns:
"we don't want to, um, put the real value, um, there because it just sort of looks bad. We made a deal with FedEx to reimburse for any missing, stolen or lost pistols, um, but we cannot put that, um, in writing or tell you, um, who to talk to at FedEx, um, you know, about the deal because we don't want it to get out". BS detector registered a ten out of ten during this conversation. Non-BS translation: We are busy working a deal to put the Colt name on Jennings, Lorcin and Bryco pistols. Leave us alone about those 1911s that lose money |
|
Maybe it only cost them $100 to make a 1911????
Got my defender parts yesterday in a white padded envelop. Cleaned the gun and put the parts in. I did notice that the replacement spring assembly had a punch mark on the plate in question. Perhaps they put this on there to signify that it was a replacement part of the proper hardness. |
| The $100 value is the maximum Fedex will pay out on a shipment unless you specify more and then of course pay a higher rate to ship the item. As they can't estimate the value of each individual gun being returned, all they could do is set a number and go across the board with it. Either way, someone would complain as they would think their gun is more valuable. Of course if Colt set the amount too high, there would be a few gun owners claiming they never received their guns or whatever and try to get the money out of it. Either way it is kind of disappointing that they don't have a better response to their customers, many of whom are die hard Colt fans. |

My New Agent is on its way. I dropped it off at the nearest FedEx staffed FedEx Express Ship Center. I'm looking at it this way: The package is being sent by Colt, to Colt, once that package is scanned in at FedEx. Once Colt can see that that your package was received by FedEx, it is trackable with a chain of custody, via FedEx. I did my part. If FedEx loses it, that is between them and Colt. Colt still accepted it, with FedEx acting on their behalf, and owes me a New Agent. They have the ability to replace it without having to run out and buy one. In the same manner, it is still in their custody, until I sign for it on its return. |

Still waiting on the call tag for my New Agent.
Spoke with Karin at Colt CS yesterday who said one had been sent to me on July 1st (which I never received) but is sending another one immediately. I'll be glad to get this repair over with, and I'm sure the rest of you feel the same way. |

You've forgotten the various Glock "upgrades" over the years - I carry 2 Glocks everyday at work and I like them, but foreign gun companies have issues too. And ask Fort Worth, TX PD about the firing pin related issues they had with their new SIG's in 2007 - SIG sent tech's to FWPD to address the problem... |

Quoted: sent my 1918 repro off on last wed and it showed up this wed. quick service indeed Excellent!! They were working on my New Agent at the same time... http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=5&f=49&t=80169 Where did they stamp your pistol as having been updated? |

Quoted: Mine arrived at Colt this morning. Heck, they've had it for 3.5 hours already, why isn't it done yet? Actually, it may already be done.... I saw that it had arrived, via the FedEx tracking system on the 11th. I was checking Colt each day, and they don't seem to update the pistol's information on this page for a couple of days. Checking on the 13th (Monday) it said that it had arrived on the 11th (Friday). So when I saw this on the 15th (Wednesday this week): Recall Information Model: O7810D Serial#: GT01xxx Status: Recall Completed Status Updated: 7/13/2009 I emailed the customer service rep, asking for a tracking number so I'd know when to be home. FedEx arrived that same day, before he responded with a tracking number, but he did email to say that it had shipped on the 13th, and he was looking for the tracking number. I'd plan accordingly... |

and just arrived at the factory in W. Hartford this morning.
