Holy Smokes!!!  I got a chance to fondle a couple of nice Ponies today and one of them was a Colt series 70 Repro in blue.....DAMN....I mean, just DAMN!!!!  What a gorgeous piece of artwork.  Gonna be ditching a couple of safe queens for this one!!!!

Also FF'd a Lightweight Combat Commander and it was a VERY nice piece.....I just don't do aluminum ( or plastic ) on pistols....otherwise I'd be pickin' up that one.

I have a blued S-70 repro and I love it. Colt can still do blue and the 1911 still looks the best in a blue job. And the LW commanders are great to carry, I have steel to shoot, alum to carry. Works well tho a LW will last a long time shooting.

The current Colts are some of the most beautiful factory 1911s Ive seen, and the Series 70 repro is THE sexiest of the bunch.

You shoulda felt this thing.  The slide, the safety, the trigger......all perfect!!!!!

The LW had a slightly mushy Gas Pedal for a safety but I have a buddy who is a safety GOD so I would have just dropped it off at his place and he'd 've fixed it right up for me.

I will say, recently I was checking out various 1911's and I really like the smoothness on the slide of the Colt I was playing with.  However, the SW1911 I was also playing with was just as nice.  I really do like both alot.

And I must say out of the box, the Colt 1911 XSE looks REALLY sharp.

Smith and Wesson does GREAT machine work.....damn good.  As soon as they learn make a 1911 with the proper extractor I'll get one.  It'd be a DAMN fine piece.

By the way, a certain Mr. Thompson spoke very highly of you.  We're going to have to get together for a day of shooting, followed by a night of drinking.

Well, I don't drink anymore ( be thankful of this ) but yes, we gotta hook up.  Let's shoot for the Christmas time frame, I have a week off during that time....

I've never heard of any problems with the SW external extractor 1911s, as for Kimber that is another story..

Yep.  Gotta love the new 70.  I have one and I initially got it with the intention of sending it out for work.  It's so beautiful though...I just can't (Unless if it's like Combat Jack's new YoBo).

I'm just glad that Colt stopped trying to sell everyone the same "Enhanced" guns with that goofy high cut.  Not that they don't make them anymore, but at least we have options (and damn good ones I might add).

OK, fine. I thought we were discussing Colt Series 70 pistols on their own merit. No mention of any other manufacturer, or class of 1911s was made. The original poster was talking strictly about Colts, as was I. So then, Colts...Fore and aft movement of barrel bushings within the slide, crooked, and uneven rollmarks, poor (mil-specish) triggers, and out of spec slides are not acceptable. To be clear, these issues have been witnessed (and discussed) by myself and a friend (a truly top notch pistolsmith). They are not, at all uncommon.

The reason I brought up LTW is that I every gunsmith there would prefer to build on Colts above all other production 1911s, yet cannot be classified as Colt fanatics. As such, there are no feelings involved, and a large sample from which to poll. The whole site is dedicated to 1911s, and is run and moderated by those in the know. That is not to imply that you don't know 1911s better than most, I know that you know your way around a set of files, and stones. In fact, I recall that I eagerly welcomed you to the Forum.

In addition, I took exception to your "get a clue" emoticon. It was unnecessary. We can disagree. I disagree with people all the time. However, there is no need to imply that one would be better off dead, or stop wasting oxygen, or whatever. It just wasn't cool.

All that said, there is something special about a blued 5" 1911 which has the word "Colt", and a prancing pony on the slide. Did I mention the bluing? Good barrels. Some good internals. In general, good guns. You and I know what we're getting into, right? I know there are a handful of Colt fans here, but what about everyone else? They hear that MIM is bad, but the trigger on their Kimber Warrior "kicks ass". What happens when they buy that Colt S70 (for a fair chunk of change), get lost in the bluing, and then find one or more of the issues I listed in the first paragraph? You know. You've read the "My XXXX sucks" threads.

I am just making an attempt to be helpful. The growing pains in the world of 1911s can be severe, especiall when you are blindsided.  I know I don't fit in well at ARFCOM, but I'm O.K. with that.

Actually, LTW is a phenomenal site.  I have no Pony in that show ( ) so I do not post there....but I ogle......ooohhhhhh, do I ogle.

Ned Christianson has to be one of the most phenomenal tool and die guys I have ever had the pleasure to witness work sacred magic on a Pony.  I dare say that he is NOT an artist....I say he IS a sage.  A SAGE, I tell you!!!!

Also, the crew at Yost/Bonitz is utterly phenomenal and they are guys after my own heart.....their work is simple, clean and true.  There is no silly "statement" to be made...all that needs to be said is said in their devotion to the 1911 in it's most simplistic, minimalistic and graceful form.

Truly,  the workmanship and dedication to form and function that those folks profess (and that many of the others on that site) speaks Louder Than Words.

I have one as well Trumpet and agree

I will say the sights could use upgrading, and the slide release is a bit shorter than I d prefer. But overall it is very seriously made

What a difference there is when you hold the 1911 70 in one hand, and a polymer handgun (any of them) in the other....

Just wow.

Lumpy and hobbs, although I see where you are coming from, I tend to focus more on the flip side of that "Glock buyer" coin. If a person is willing to spend $500 on a perfectly ugly, but functioning Glock, doesn't it stand to reason that he would expect more from an $800 Colt? I personally think Colt 1911s are fairly priced for what you get, and considering that it is a union shop. I also think that they have made some serious improvements over what they shipped in the 80's and 90's. They guns are beautiful, and they go bang. To many people, a 1911 is a 1911. Those are the people I was attempting to help. At any rate, as I said, their Customer Service (capitalized purposely) is great. Should our gun not be up to snuff, Colt will take care of you. It is for that reason that I tend to recommend Colt and SA over most factory gun manufacturers; I truly believe they care about their customers.

Hobbs, communication is a good thing, even if fumbled at times. We are good.

Be well!

I would buy a Series 70 in a heartbeat but Colt wont submit it to the Cal DOJ drop test. Rock Island, Ed Brown, Les Baer and Wilson Combat are able to get their mechanically identical 1911A1's to pass without any special changes like a 9mm sized Ti firing pin, FP block, or extra power FP spring. The Colt Ser70 repro should be able to pass the drop test as well. If they are scared about failing, they could just ship it out with a Ti FP and extra power spring like SA, and include the regular parts inside the case, or a voucher that can be sent in to get the replacement parts for free or for a small nominal fee. Despite the high prices , people are buying their S80 NRM guns right and left out here. Kommiefornia is one of the biggest gun market in nation despite the political climate to the contrary, and they could sell a bunch more if they got it through the tests.

Gorgeous pic.....

So, I went to pick up that S70 today.....guess what....THEY UPPED THE PRICE BY A HUNDRED BUCKS.  I swear to God that last week it was 879...I felt it was pricey BUT the shop does deal a bit and I figured I'd see if I could get a "tax break" to make it even out a bit.....I go in today.....979 bucks for the 45...the 38 Super was 879.  Now, last week I SWEAR to GOD both were nearly the same price.  I was a bit steamed but I was polite....I haven't been sleeping well lately ( OKAY...I HAVEN'T SLEPT AT ALL ) so maybe I DID goof it up.  but dammit, I know a .45 caliber hole from a .38 caliber hole

VERY BUMMED.....

HOWEVER....I am gonna chill in the moat and wait for my tuition reimbersement to come in and add to my kitty......let's see what happens in January......

I was gonna just pass on the S70 after today...but then Dubb showed me that pic....
