I found a guy with a combat commander about 20 years old for sale. Gun is in good shape has had some trigger work
and an upgraded colt barrel. He wants $750, I can buy new for about the same. When I look a others for sale the older
pistols seem priced more than new. I'm new to 1911s am I missing something here, has colt downgraded something?
Thanks for some insight.

that is about average     if it is indeed 20yrs old it is a series 70 and has the colt emblem on the slide..  Colt does not make the series 70 any more and for a long time they didnt make that gun ..   I havent kept up with it I dont know if they do now... I know that other companies make clones..

Colt never made a Series 70 Commander.

As to the OP ........... Upgraded Barrel and trigger work done by who? A reputable Smith or Bubba?

Have the gun checked out by a REPUTABLE 1911 smith.

Colt stopped making the "pre 80" series Combat Commanders in the early 80's.  There were no 70 Series CCs as the 70 Series pistols of the era had the collet barrel bushings and Commanders never had that, so no 70 Series CCs. If the pistol is really "only" 20 years old, its probably an 80 Series and that's just fine, but it does have the firing pin block which some folks don't want.  Makes no difference to most.  I paid $599 a year ago for a pre-80 Series Combat Commander that was functionally sound but badly in need of some cosmetic rejuvenation.  I now have much more money in it that it will ever be worth, but its a good shooter and I'm not embarassed to take it to the range.

The price sounds OK for a Series 80 pistol in nice shape. No screamin' deal, however. Custom work isn't worth much unless the work is documented and performed by a smith with at least a local reputation.  Don't know how to rationalize the difference or lack of it, in price between the older Colts and the newly manufactured.  The new ones would have the advantage of whatever warranty Colt offers, but lack the "patina" of an older model.

Colt never made any 70 series Commanders of either variety. You need to look closely at your Colt and you'll see no Series 70 markings or attributes.

And if you think that because the Ser # begins with 70 that it means that it's a Series it doesn't.

i cant figure out how to post these pic's on here        guidance please

I also thought that a series 70 didnt have a trigger plunger like the series 80, I thought that is what separated the series.

The "original" Series 70 introduced the collet barrel bushing, but it was only incorporated into the full sized GVMT and GCNMs, not the Commander series, so there never was an original "Series 70 Commander/Combat Commander.  The Series 80 introduced the firing pin safety in 1983, I believe to all of the Colt 1911-based pistols of the period, and the Commanders were so-designated  as 80-Series after that, although the full-sized GVMT models did retain the collet barrel bushings for a while after 1983 as 80 Series.  Make sense?

The "retro or repro" 70 Series produced recently, do not have the fp block, but also don't have the dreaded collet barrel bushing.

Are you using the plain editor or the WYSIWYG editor?

The Mark IV Series 70 designation was ONLY given to Government and NM Gold Cup Models that incorporated the accurizer barrel and collet bushing.

The Series 80 designation denotes the addition of the firing pin block assembly to all Colt 1911's. Shortly after introducing the Series 80 guns Colt discontinued the accurizer barrel and bushing on the Government and NM Gold Cup models returning to pre Series 70 configuration.

The pre Series 70 Governmnet and the Series 70 Government as well as both the Commander and Combat Comander all share the same trigger, hammer, disconector, firing pin, firing pin stop and extractor. None of these parts changed untill the advent of the Series 80 guns.

That seems kind of pricey, especially given that it's in an unknown state of Bubba-ization.

$750 for a box stock pre-80s series Commander, yeah.  But an "upgraded" S80?  I'd pass unless I had proof the mods were done by a 'smith who knows his stuff.

I paid 500 and the gun looks it. I don't think the recoil spring was ever changed.

For that price, it better be in VG/excellent shape. If it's been dinked with, then it's worth less to most people.

$600.00 is probably a more accurate price range.

What is an "upgraded" Colt barrel? Sounds like he's shovelin a bit O' the blarney to me. That would make me leery of ANY work done on the gun.
