I'm looking to buy a Colt revolver for my father as a gift.  He likes the diamondback model.  He said that there were two different grips for this revolver, an older small grip and a newer large grip.  How can I tell the difference?  Since I'm thinking about getting one for a gift I didn't want to ask too many questions!  How can I tell?  SN range?  Shape?  Any help is appreciated.

I only know the Diamondback to be a medium frame revolver, he might mean the stocks/grips that are standard=smaller or large=target types.

The Diamondback is a Colt "D" frame gun.  Same as the Police Positive Special, Detective Special, Cobra, Agent, and Viper.  The grip frame has changed over the years on the "D" frame.

Originally it was a squared but, full frame.  Later it got rounded off at the corners.  Later still, it got shortened.  They did this to allow a shorter grip on the older Agent.  The rest of the line simply used grip panels that were the same outside dimensions as the full grip, and just filled in where the frame was with wood.

I beleive that the Diamonback came after the change to the short frame, so they should all be the same underneath.  Just get him one, and change the grips out for whatever he wants.

Again, any "D" frame grip will work, as long as it's the same frame type (i.e. length).
