I know I want the 1* Enhanced package offered by Yost-Bonitz Custom. However, I'm having a heck of a time trying to decide between the Colt Series 70 and Springfield Armory GI to use as a base gun.

The problem I have with the Colt is that it comes with better parts. But if many of the components are going to be replaced anyways, is it worth the additional expense to purchase the better quality gun in the first place?

I have several issues with the SA GI. I suspect it comes with a two-piece barrel. The ejector may not be pinned. I've heard that SA uses a different frontstrap cut. Is this true, and if so, how is it different? Lastly, does the GI have "IMBEL BRAZIL" markings on the frame?

First I got to say that I am a Colt fan and I love my 1* on my Series 70.  If the gun is strictly for work then I say get the SA.  If you plan to have the gun as an heirloom as well as a work gun go with the Colt.  The SA once it leaves the Yo-Bo shop I am sure is more than adequate.  In my opinion the Colt will make a better looking gun that will command a higher price if you ever decide to sell it.

FWIW the GI SA WILL have a IMBAL BRAZIL on the bottom of the "dust cover". As an Import it is required to be marked in a visible spot. I would prefer, if it was mine, to do it on a Colt rather then a SA, especially if I was spending serious cash. I am NOT a fan of the 2 piece BBL and I am not all that impressed with the rough chambers you can get. Colt BBLS are pretty good.

IIRC Yo-Bo replaces the glued SA ejector with a good one and pins it.  Yes IMBEL BRAZIL is stamped on the bottom of the dust cover (at least on my two).  But only lightly.

I have both an SA and Colt Yo-Bos (similar to 1*).  I like the Colt better and recommend the Colt.  Colt is a better gun, it's US made and has real history, value and pride associated with it.  The Colt will be worth more down the road.  The SA works fine though.  The SA saved me about $250 over another Colt, and Colt prices are even higher now, so if you can't get the dough for the Colt, the choice is clear.  I would try to get the Colt though.

Having been through I'd also recommend you get more than just the 1* or even 1* enhanced packages.  For example I'd order brush polished slide flats, 'cause if your gonna pay $1,500 for a gun, it at least outta look good.

On a 1* Elite built on a Colt, the slide flats come polished.
