I apologize if this is already on here but I did not see it.  I have a Springfield mil spec and was wondering if a commander hammer will work with the existing grip safety?

The short answer is no.  You need a rat tail safety like the one pictured below:

Or you need a beaver tail type safety, either a drop in, or one that requires fitting that will require some frame filing and blending to look good.

A third option would be to have the "Rat Tail" modification done to your current safety, or do it yourself if you are handy.

Thank you, that is what I thought but I was reading reviews on a couple of hammers and people were saying they dropped right in with no mods so I got confused.

As opposed to rat tailing, has anyone ever cut the GS tang completely off, following the profile of the frame tang?

I have a Springfield GI Champion and I'd like to install the ring style hammer and was thinking about doing it. The GS is a cheap enough part that if it didn't look good I could get another GS and rat tail it.

Just a thought.......

If rat tailing, what tool/tools would I use? Assuming I don't have a mill.

Sorry for the hijack, OP.

I have a 1911 set up just like that, the grip safety is completely flush with the tang and pinned and the gun has a bobbed hammer.
