What are the benefits and cons?

I see quite a few people carrying compact pistols like the g19 and the p30 as general purpose pistols. I'm pretty sure they suffer from some drawbacks. Do the decreased muzzle velocity, sight radius, and other cons?

The G19 is no 34, but it's hard to think of it as a real compact. I think the 17 with a 19 grip is the heat though.

G19 is mid sized pistol. Fills the niche of both small and big as it's easily concealable and shoots just as well as a full sized pistol.

As to revolvers, I like my magna-ported 3' S&W Model 60, 357 mag. Small, compact, relatively light, stainless steel and great sights! What's not to love!

It can do most anything I need depending on the rounds loaded:
Snake shot.
150gr SWC, mild load.
158gr. LHP, +P
110 low recoil Hydrashock.
and if necessary hotter 357 mag. loads but honestly, they are shot few and far between!

The porting really helps with the recoil and muzzle flip.

The FNX-9 falls in that size area as well.

Actually in Glock size terms it's a 19 slide on a 17 frame, sort of.

I see no drawback to it at all.  It's very accurate for me, handles well and has been 100%.

What's not to like?

I really like 'compact' pistols for the most part. While I don't try to shoot at 100 yards with my handguns, I am very happy with the performance at 7 to 25 yards and even a little farther. I practice most just at 7, 15, or 25 yards with carry pistols.
There are drawbacks with shorter barrels but in today's market, most good pistol makers are making some pretty accurate compacts. In the end it usually comes down to shooter and practice.

I'm also a fan of compact pistols since they can multi-role pretty well.

In fact until my Glock 17 gets here, I shoot a Glock 26 for some competitive pistol matches. Works like a charm and is more accurate than me.

The only reason I'm picking up a Glock 17 is for a more positive grip and higher capacity. But if I were to go back to before I bought the Glock 26, I would have just bought a Glock 19 and have been done with it.

I carry a Glock 27. It is very accurate, concealable, and holds 9+1 rounds. I really don't see any draw backs OP.

The glock 19 is like the swiss army knife of handguns. Definitely smaller and more concealable than the 17 by a good margin but still feels like you are carrying a real handgun and not some pipsqueak compromise. I can't imagine a pistol I would carry IWB over the 19.
