Looking to buy my 4th XD or XDM in .40 cal. , this will be my first for concealed carry. I'm looking for opinions on 3.8 or 4.5 to conceal carry. Other than the obvious of size difference and has anyone carried both?

I've carried a full size Xdm9 and a Service XD45 with no issues. Get a good IWB holster and the 4.5 and don't look back.

Wow that's hiding a lot of gun. IWB just looks uncomfortable. I was thinking OWB. I don't tuck my shirts.

I ccw  with a 5 shot ss smith and a newly acquired G27. I dont think size matters as much b/w those two vs weight. The weight of them pulling down on your pants is a pita. I never had a good rig for my 5 shot so it always annoyed me. I used a leather owb and a nylon iwb with it and never liked either. I got a cobra OWB kydex holser for the g27 and it is awesome.

BTW. I handed one of the new mini xd45's and that thing is nice. I considered getting one but came up with a great deal on the g27 instead.

I really want to try the XDS, both in 45 and the new 9

Both the xdm 3.8 and 4.5 are going to conceal just the same. Even the 5.25 will conceal just as easy depending on what position you carry it in. The grip length determines haw easy it is to conceal.

Now if you got a 3.8 compact grip length it makes a big difference in concealing a pistol. Then you can always take you 3.8 compact bottom and put the 4.5 or 5.25 slide on it. Gives you the shorter grip with longer
barrel for better accuracy.

I carry a full size xd9 IWB. I'm less than 6 foot and 190 and it works fine for me...

A good belt is a requirement regardless of IWB or OWB. Then a good holster after that of which there are many. Others ahve already mentioned the grip length is really the issue when it comes to concealing. Of course that these are double stack pistols also makes them bulkier but going up a size in the waist takes care of that.

I CC a 4in XD all the time. I typically carry it in an OWB holster. In the spring/summer, I use a hawaiian shirt as a cover garment, in the fall/winter a jacket. Not a problem. I do have a good non-rolling stiff belt. I sometimes wear suspenders if I also put a bunch of other crap in my cargo pants pockets.

I've also carried a 4" XD in one of those 5.11 Holster Shirts. It conceals MUCH better than any holster. The drawback is the draw. It's a lot more cumbersome than drawing from a regular hip holster.

The XDS disappears in the Holster Shirt. I haven't found a good hip holster for the XDS yet.

Both the XD and XDS carry in a Swiss Gear or Jansport fanny pack easily.

The 5in XD and 5.25 XDM are just too big for a real good concealed carry weapon. If you're wearing a long winter jacket, probably not an issue. If not, they're just too long.

I bought an XD sub in 40 because my XDm 40 4.5 felt way to big

I used to carry an XD9 service, now I have an XDm9c3.8.  I like the XDm more, but both carry comfortably IWB.  It's comfortable enough with a t-shirt under the holster tucked in that you can forget it's even there.  I carry the XDm in warm weather, but in cold weather I tend to prefer my 1911.

I carried an XD9 service model for a while before I got my XD45 Compact. It became my CC gun until I got my hands on my XDS. Love my XDS, plan on picking one up in 9mm Stainless as soon as I can get my hands on one, just to give me another carry option...and a reason to buy another gun! LOL
