For a "service grade" concealed carry weapon there a few options.

Depending on your individual frame you may be able to carry some larger weapons.

Right off of the top of my head i would recommend an M&P 9c or a G19.

If you're looking for weapons that will be conceivably "reliable" enough you could look at a walther PPS, a springfield EMP or the khar line of weapons.

You have alot of choices but honestly, i think you will find that most people that know what they're talking about will recommend an uber reliable platform like a Glock or an M&P.

Under $500 you can get a CZ P07 Duty, Ruger P95 or an XD. All great handguns.

I would take a lightly used G19 if I had to before anything else mentioned here...Glock all the way.

Looks like Buds Gun Shop has the G19 for $494 delivered price...have to log in to get the price.

If you want something thinner than a Glock 19, look at the Kahr CW9. (About $420 new)
I carry it alot more than I do my G19.  It just kind of dissapears.

i would recommend a compact model Glock. these can be had for around $500(new!) if you shop around. if you like 9mm you will not be disappointed with a G19. if you would feel more comfortable launching some bigger bullets you cannot go wrong with a G23... same size as the G19 but chambered for .40S&W. you'll lose 2 rounds in magazine capacity but carry spare 15rd. G22 mags.

here's my go-to CCW: G19 w/ Truglo's TFO sights...

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk309/05LT/0306001014a.jpg

my load-out consists of 15+1 in the pistol with 2 spare G17 (17rd.) magazines (50 rounds of 9mm Gold Dot HPs!)

+1.

You can probably also swing an SR9 or SR9c for less than $500, both of which will probably conceal better than a P95.

Might also look at a police trade in S&W 3rd generation auto.

You can probably also get a new CZ75B at or under the $500 mark.  Not the best CCW due to its size, but it'll still be working reliably after we're all dead and buried.

I wouldnt own a 9mm that has a barrel under 3.5 inches for main carry

Glock 19 - First choice if only one 9mm

For the money, grab a police trade-in Glock 19 for your absolute best all around CCW and one man gun.

You can find them used for $435-450.

Well worth the price and you can learn all you need at GlockTalk

34 or so parts.  If any break, you're looking at $10-15 to fix usually and they are both accurate and durable.

If I could only have one gun, it would be the Glock 19.

If you like Sigs, Sig 239 2nd choice.

You could also go for a compact Sig P239 - another great shooter.

Or you could shoot a classic - a Smith and Wesson 3913.

There is a batch of Maine State Police trade-ins for $520 right now.

Glock 26, 17, or 19. Like you I set a price range of about 500. I picked up one of my 17s for just under 500 and a Gen 4 17 for just over 500. I picked up the Gen 4 at Cabelas at a special sale they were having. Looking around you should be able to find some good deals.

Lots of options for $500.  That will more than get you a quality firearm.

With some searching you could find a new or used Glock.  The 19 would be my preference.
A Springfield XD.
Sig P250... though some might not like them.
A Kel-tec PF-9
A Kel-Tec P-11
Again with some searching, you could find a used Kahr CW9 for under that.  The MSRP is I think, $549, so you should be able to find a new one for a bit less and a used one for under $400 with a bit of searching and patience.
The CZs are pretty damn good guns for not a lot of money.

XD subcompact 9. I like the grip safety and the feel of it more than glock.

Or.. GET BOTH

[#26]
Many good choices here.  Just buy a quality gun.  Which IMO, rules out Taurus and Kel-Tec.
6/27/2010 10:03:42 PM EDT
[#27]
OP, go and handle a G19 before you decide on that.  I found out the hard and expensive way that I cannot tolerate Glocks.  Just make sure the Glock works for you.  If you don't find it to be comfortable, there are other pistols that are it's equal that will be much more ergonomic.
6/28/2010 10:03:38 AM EDT
[#28]
The two 9s that I would look at for a first time buy are Glock and the Smith and Wesson M&P.  Both offer fullsize and compact models.

The M&P is said by many to have better ergonomics and be easier to shoot.  The Glock(in 9mm) sets the benchmark for reliability and ease of service.  Both are exceptional firearms.

G19 is what I'd get.   It has the reputation it does as the most reliable 9mm compact for a reason.

What do you think of the PPS?  Can you give some feedback on that one?  And also the USP compact?

The PPS seems like it might be soooo thin it might be annoying when shooting.  Do you find that?  I like the idea of it though.  I'm really interested in the USP Compact right now.

If you join GSSF you can get a Glock for $420 or so.  It costs $35 to join.  So we are talking about $455 plus tax.  Google GSSF for information or check the Glock section of this site.  Also Glocktalk is a good place to look.  Basically you should get the Glock 19.

Try posting in the carry issues handgun section, and also they have pics with the firearms holstered and concealed.  I would go with a Kahr CW9 IMO.

Glock 19 or 26 is a great choice
S&W M&P9C...I carry this one a lot.. S&W are running a rebate of 50.00 till OCT. for a new purchase...
Sig P250 can be found for that price
Sig Pro SP2022..I Highly recomend this one...also in my carry rotation although a bit larger than a Glock19
Sprigfield XD's Sub compact
If you really look hard online you can find a Used Sig 229 for about that price if you want to go that route
I also carry a 229 a lot...
So you have a lot of choices shop and compare they are all really great pistols

For the money and the intention of carry, I don't think you could beat the very flat single-stack 3rd generation Smith and Wessons.  The lower priced 908 or the stainless 908S would be ideal.  The design is highly dependable.  Here's what they look like:
