Lately I've been considering adding a new handgun to my lineup, primarily for EDC and HD. I've been carrying a Sig P228 for the last seven years, and the gun is now 22 years old. I thought I should maybe add another reliable gun just to give my old Sig a break. Right now there's a ton of trade-in USPs on the market. Since I'm talking concealed carry I'm sure the P2000 or the P30 will be suggested, but they're not cheap and I'm saving to build a dedicated upper for my suppressed 9mm AR. Not to mention the prices on some of the HK mags are just nuts.
I've never even handled an HK of any kind before, and for some reason I've never given them a second look in the gun store. However I've read nothing but good things about their accuracy and reliability and thought now may be the time to give a look to the HK lineup of guns. There's a local dealer that has a few in stock and I plan on going by and see how they feel. I only wish there was a local range where I could rent one and actually fire one before I decided. So, is the HK really as dead-nuts reliable and accurate as I've been reading? Are they worth the money? |
| I just downloaded CDNN's latest catalog, and the price difference between the USPs and P30s aren't that much. However at the local shops I'm afraid that won't be the case. CDNN's trad-in USPs are under $500. I've ordered from them before, I may get one from them after I handle a few of them locally. |

I too have four USPs and never had any issues. HK makes a good gun, which is why the hold value well. If the price of mags is an issue, then you might want to look at another manufacturer, as HK is not known for cheap mags Boy ain't that the truth! Just browsing the HK mag prices on CDNN was a real eye opener. |
| I looked at a P2000 and a USP Tactical 9mm today. I really liked the feel of the P2000 because it was comparable in size to my P228. The Tactical is really appealing to me because I've bought a suppressor and I'm just waiting on my stamp to come in. But I really want something that is concealable. I'm not making a decision until I get my hands on a USP and a USP Compact. I'm probably going to stick with 9mm. |

Yeah, I'm not that patient. Whenever I buy a gun first thing I do is order 2 more mags. Have a minimum of 4 mags for any gun I own. When I said they aren't known for cheap mags, I was referring to MSRP and "everyday prices." But you are correct, if you find a good deal, jump on it- or someone else will!

You are on course my friend. My experience with the USP's have been Great. I have a .45 and a .40.
They have both been flawless right out of the box. Now want to get the 9mm ...just because I can. The cost of the mags is not a great concern to me. Just buy them. Not like you have to buy them every week. I bet they will last a lifetime. |
| I've got a few USP's ...been using them since '95. I've never bought a new one... shoot them all the time. Never had a failure of any type with them. They are built to last... Magazines for the funnel jets are going to cost you big time.. but its a (1) time expense... the others you can find cheap... sportsmansguide has had the 10rd on sale for $7.99 and $9.99, thats where I got the bulk of mine. natchez supply is another location. I also shoot hard cast lead reloads through mine (another no-no per the book).. It makes the .40 & .45 ammo a lot cheaper. I don't have accuracy or fouling issues that allegedly occur. I clean the barrel after every outing real well. 9 lead and 1 jacketed chaser seems to work at keeping the barrel clean (lean diet). If you buy used you'll probably never loose $ and you'll have a reliable piece. Good luck... Warning... If you get one... you'll get another...and |

ETA: Also, I want to throw in with the "do it!" crowd. I'm addicted to the USP as well! |

The BEST always cost a little more . Deal with it or don't have the best . H&K- No Compromise !
I bought my 1st USP as soon as they released the USP 45 . Came with a cool Benchmade knife with the USP 45 etched on the blade , night sites , and a HK long sleeve HK 45 t-shirt . $699 . Still have it all and never used the knife . This gun has never ever had an issue and I use to use it in a combat class every Friday night for a year . Not one jam ever . Also have a USP compact 9mm , and (2) USP compact 40's . The second 40 because I couldn't pass it up last weekend when I saw it in a gun shop on consignment . The guy want $560 . I took it home for $450 . Mint , spotless , no sign of wear . Good Luck |

I've owned a glock, beretta, and two sigs of various calibers. Now i'm running a usp in 9mm. I would say they're on par with the rest, no better nor worse. They're overpriced in my book (sigs, too), but they are are good to go.
Really, there's only one way to find out if you'll like it. You have to buy one and try it out. |

I have an awesome USP Tactical .45 that runs as well with the Gemtech Blackside as it does without.
I've shot hogs with my USP and with my Glock 20... There is no question which one ended up on my nightstand based upon the amazing difference energy transferred into the target. 10mm is so much more powerful and, with Double Tap Equalizer 230's (two projectiles per round) or BONDED 200's OR the amazing Win Silvertip 175's, you're looking at such a step up in performance from .45 that I can't see carrying my USP .45 when I hunt or as the first line of home defense. Yes, you've got to tune up your Glock...but with the right guide rod/spring set-up (LWD SS) you'll have a 100% reliable weapon and 17 rounds of THUMP. I know the HK is a BETTER weapon but when I'm in chest high underbrush with a big hog close by, I choose 10mm to keep us safe (me and my sons). .45 could do the job, 10mm WILL do the job. Just sayin, you should check it out. And you'd save $400-500. And for concealed you can get the G29, which I feel like is better balanced albeit lower capacity. |
