So given all the different designs out there (frame safety, slide safety, decocker, etc..) what would be a good training collection? Meaning, what handguns could you acquire that would cover the gamut of the various manual of arms for the majority of the handguns in service throughout the world?

Like:
HK USP
SIG 226
S&W 686
S&W 5906
Beretta M9 (92F?)

etc..

PS Forgive me if some of these are the same from a manual of arms perspective; I'm unfamiliar with the S&W and Beretta autos, so I don't know if they operate the same.

In my opinion, to train people properly on just semi-auto handguns, you would have to show them the following:

- Double action trigger, single action trigger, a hybrid type of trigger like Sig's DAK or HK's LEM
- Striker fired, hammer fired
- Manual safety, passive safeties
- Decocker
- Push button mag release, paddle mag release like on HKs and Walthers
- Difference in sighting systems, like Glock's factory sights, or Sig's post and dot sights, or how HK sights are set up so you cover the target with the front dot.
- Exotic cocking style like HK's P7
- Calibers

While there are plenty more to name, I think those are the big ones.  To settle all of these, I think you could just buy:

- HK USP 45 V1
- HK USP 40 LEM
- Springfield XD9
- HK P7

The XD would serve to show the operation of a striker fired gun and how the trigger feels on such guns.  It would also show the passive style safeties seen on certain guns.  It would also show the push button mag release seen on most pistols.

With the USP V1, you could show how a double action works, how a single action works, how a decocker works, how a manual safety works, and how the trigger feels on each.  While it would be nice to show a single action and manual safety on a 1911, it would be more cost effective just to give someone the general idea with the USP.  It would also show the paddle mag release on USP and Walther guns.

If you want to get exotic, the USP 40 LEM would just show the difference between 40 and 45 while also showing the LEM trigger option.  The XD9 would represent what a comparable 9mm would feel like.

The P7 would just show a system unlike anything else out there.

I'm thinking of how to do this cheaply.  I didn't include a Glock because the XD pretty much covers everything the Glock has if you are teaching a newer person to shoot, save for the grip angle.  The USP covers how to operate a 1911 and a Sig, I think.  And I didn't want to use a metal Sig because it would make someone believe one caliber is softer than another because the gun would be heavier.

If I had to pick one to cover a lot of bases, I'd pick the USP.  If I picked two I'd pick the USP 45 V1 and the XD9.  If three I'd add the P7.  And if four I'd add the USP 40 LEM.
