How does one convert a USP40 Compact from variant 1 to variant 3, can I do this myself? I ask because I want a variant 3 but they are so difficult to find and the variant 1's are so easy to find

Many owners have changed their own detent plates & whatnot theirselves. However, we don't know where your level of gunsmithing skills are in relation to the grand scheme of things, yes?

Personally, *I* would prefer to have a factory armory trained person to do it in order to have a paper trail if for no other reason.

Funny you should mention that. I've been thinking about doing the same thing, just backwards. I have a V3 and was recently wondering how to convert to a V1. I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of replacing your control lever and hammer axle. I LOVE my V3, but sometimes I just feel like having a safety when I'm carrying and my piece is pointed at my nuts. If you've never done it, stripping your frame is pretty easy.

You do not need to replace the control lever but you can if the SF markings bother you.  All you really need is the $10 detent plate and it will take longer to type out the instructions than to do it.
Press in on the detent plate pin enough to clear the detent plate.
Keep hold of the plate because it is under spring tenion.
Ease out the plate and install the new plate.
Push back in the plate pin and done.

If you do want the un-marked control lever the cost goes from about $10 to about $60 for the new control lever, or you can paint out the SF marks with black Testor's paint.

And if you are going from V3 to V1, same is true.  Spend the extra bucks if you want the SF marks but you don't need  anything other than the V1 detent plate.

Changing out the control lever is a bit more complicated than the detent plate but it is not a hard job if you have any mechanical skills at all and are willing to read, take notes, and take your time.  You can use the "detailed strip" instructions posted on HKPRO forums, Handgun board, and they are tacked near the top of the board.

Or maybe you two could swap detent plates and everyone is happy?

And Bob makes a good point.  If anyone other than HK Georgia (moving from Trussville Alabama) does the conversion then "by the book," it voids the warranty.  What that really means is if you manage to screw something up swapping out the plate and/or control lever then the repair will be on your dime.
