| Can a P-16 be converted to shoot 10mm by using a Colt Delta slide and barrel? |
| Yes. You could even keep your slide if you wanted to, as long as we're talking the P16-40. You need to make a barrel change, and get a new recoil spring. While your at that, you might want to replace the firing pin spring. You might have issues with the feed lips/release point of the mags. I would be willing to bet that Dano523 has the answer on that topic. |
Way overkill since you would have to mate the delta slide to the frame (read one of the slides will be looser on the frame than the other if the plan is to swap back and forth), and maybe adjust the firing pin lock for both slides (read real PITA). Since a 40 is just a shorter 10 MM, the simple solution is to just ream out the .40 barrel to 10mm and change the 20lb recoil spring to a 24 lb unit. If your going to leave the firing pin lock in, you can leave the firing pin spring alone, but since most of the Wolf springs come with a extra strength firing pin spring as well, you may as well use it (read if your going to pull the firing pin block system, use the extra power spring). Also, since the Para frames are on the soft side, use a recoil buffer. To even better the deal, with just an additional barrel and bushing, you could go back and forth using the same frame and slide, but remember that the 10mm loads/pressure is going to wear out the frame faster than if it is shooting 40 only. As for mags/feeds, as Hobbs pointed out, you may have problems depending on the mag and extractor style. The New Para mags feed fine with loads that are 1.225, but the New Mec-gar's need to have the feed lips cut back to Para lenghts. Note: I was having problems with Mac-gar mags just running 1.190 OAL 40cal, so this tweak should be done even for pistols running 40 with the mags. As for the extractor, you may have to correct it to allow the longer round to feed . Again, I was having problems with my SX extractor when Long loading the 40, and ended up tweaking it to allow a clean feed. Give us a better idea of what you are trying to accomplish. If it's the ability to change slides back and forth, veer away from this since single slides should be mated to single frames (barrel swaps will be better since a 40 slide and 10mm slide are one and the same). If the game plan is to build up a double stack 10 MM, then the upper information should help, but a better option is you do have a Delta slide/barrel sitting around is to just mate it to a new frame. Dawson sells STI frames, and with enough smithing, the extra weapon could be a real eye catcher. |
Just because I have blown up more pistols than the rest of you guys doesn't mean I'm the expert on seeing how far you can take a stock pistol to the edge. Now on the other hand, If they just allow me to run my 92FS as a MPF, I'm already there. |

My goal is to make a 16 shot 10mm 1911. I like the idea of either getting a 10mm barrel and leaving the same slide. I am also concidering cutting the slide to officer length and putting a fixed comp on the barrel and returning it to standard length. I had a P-16 with that set up and I loved it. I now want to do the same thing in 10mm. |

Just ream the stock 40 cal barrel to 10mm if the pistol is going to stay 10mm. If you going to go back and forth between the two, buy a Bar-sto barrrel in 40 and fit it. Between the two, the 40 is going to be the easier cal to shoot, and should be the better barrel. |
Would I need to take it to a gunsmith to have it reamed? I am not planning to switch between the 2 calibers I am planning to make it 10mm and keep it that way. Would it be cheaper to ream the barrel or just buy a new one? |
| Reamers are pricey, so I would find a smith who would do it. It should be much cheaper than a new barrel. However, if you're going to go to the trouble of getting a comp, you might consider a new 10mm barrel. There is a guy who was selling a used Clark match barrel and full profile comp in the EE. Let me see if I can find it and I'll add the link. It was dirt cheap. |

www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=89&t=263570 Though used, it's hard to beat a $55 barrel/comp. The seller is a top notch guy to deal with, and he is usually more critical in his descritptions of his merch than required. |

Hobbs, he may be opening up a can of worms if the combo barrel is not ramped for Para ramp cut, and if the barrel was already fitted and needed to be welded to be fit to his slide. On the other hand, If the barrel/comp is unfitted, and Clark/Para feed ramp cut, it's a smoking deal!!!!!! |
| It's a Clark/Para ramp, but it's definitely a used barrel that has already been fitted. Most likely it will not fit any worse than his current barrel, but who knows. Bill is a top notch guy though, so he might offer an inspection peroid. I passed on it since it was already fitted, but that's because I had a BarSto on the way already. |
| Good deal. I can't remember how much it was, and Bill already marked it sold, but it was a good price for a used barrel, much less a Clark with a comp. Even if it's not the tightest fit, it should be pretty good. Let us know. You'll like dealing with Bill too. He's a good guy who keeps you updated. |
