I have a chance to acquire a Colt Custom Combat Elite that I don't know much about. I was told that 500 of these were made but only 200 were sold. This information came from the seller who said he called Colt. There is slight pitting on the outside of the barrel where the .45 is stamped and some minor pitting on the hammer. Frame and slide look ok. No box or paperwork is included as this was destroyed in a house fire. The seller is not the original owner. The serial number is Munson 0XX. Does anybody know about this? I assume that Colt sold these to him and he did custom work and added his own serial numbers. Any idea on value? Has been fired but can't tell how much. Anything to look for as I know nothing about 1911's.

Maybe Lumpy can anser this one
The second Best thing to do would be to call Colt, or post on the 1911 board or pistolsmith

Your going to have to call Colt on this one.  To the best of my recollection, Combat Elites were simply a Series 80 Colt with a stainless frame and a blued slide.  As for the serial number, thats the confusing part.  Is it his name?  Im not familiar with any distributors by that name that might have had a special run done.

Maybe a police department had a special order made up for them?
A 3M pad, gently stroked across the pits should blend them in on the chamber hood area. (barrel removed)
That spot is unfinished bare steel.
Those Millet sights are indeed high profile and the front one may not be readily changed.
With barrel removed, look inside the top of the slide for two rivets.
That was the dual crimp system of installing the front Millet sight and once done, you are "blessed" with two holes.
Unique gun maybe, but I wouldn't pay a premium for it based on rarity.
Also, most likely, no warranty is offered either, compared to something new.
As you say, knowing nothing about 1911's, I can't tell you to buy it.
Lumpy suggests calling Colt, I second that, at least for more information.
