I have an immaculate second year S&W 25-5 that is an average shooter at best. It has the oversized cylinder throats that most pinned barrel 25-5's are known for. S&W has what they call the "improved cylinder" for the Mod 25 in inventory. I thought I would get one and swap it out but in talking with customer service, the rep seemed to really want me to send the gun in so they could do it.

Is this something that should be best left to the factory to do?

Yes.

I have a 25-2 with .455" throats. It shouldn't shoot well, but it does. I have been thinking about having the cylinder replaced for quite a while, but when I think about how well it shoots, I can't bring myself to do it.

Cylinders have to be fitted.  Almost nothing drops in on revolvers.

Yes. The factory, a S&W service center, or a good gunsmith will need to do the work. The barrel to cylinder gap will have to be checked and possibly adjusted. The timing may need to be adjusted.

You don't just "swap it out "(any of the internals or cylinder) on double action revolvers.
