Hey guys,

I'm finishing up my master's degree this semester and have decided I'm buying myself my first 1911 as a gift for all of the BS I've put up with over the last few years.  I am pretty set on Colt.  I did some research a number of months ago, and thought I had it narrowed down between the Gold Cup Trophy and the Combat Elite.  The CE seems to have some nice features, but I'm not sure I like the dual tone.  I'm heading to a gunshow in April and can hopefully check them out then and make the final decision.

Anyway, I've been doing some browsing thru the forum and also see people like the 1991's and 70-series reproductions.  And I think my problem, I'm not sure I know enough about all of the models I've mentioned to make an informed choice.  Again, I'm pretty sure I'm set on a Colt government right around or under a grand.  Anyone have a moment to give me the rundown between the GC, CE, S70 and the 1991's?  And no, one of each is not an option at this point.

Thanks in advance.

Congrats on your Masters. I bought my first four guns last year. A Colt 6940, a Glock 17, a Springfield XDm9,  and a Glock 19. (In that order.) My "tricked out" 6940 is my favorite. Next is my Glock 19. 3rd favorite is my Glock 17 and lastly the XDm9.

For the 100th anniversary of the 1911 I felt that I needed (wanted) my first .45. Didn't like the 1991's or the S70. Went back and forth between the CE and Gold Cup Trophy.

My 2011, SS, Gold Cup arrived last week. (waiting on the waiting period to pick it up)

Out of all of the available  AR's I chose a Colt 6940 and WITHOUT A DOUBT I made the right choice. Even though I have not yet received my GCT I am positive it was the right choice for a 1911. CE's are awesome, but if I didn't buy the GCT I would have over spent on a Combat Elite. My recommendation is a Gold Cup.

Thanks for the response.   I do like the SS Gold Cup, but it doesn't seemed to get mentioned here very much (like the 1991 and series 70 do) and I was just wondering if there was a reason behind that.

I'm hoping I can see all of these different models at the show and perhaps one will jump out at me.

Thanks for the congrats.

They are much more expensive than the first two models that you mentioned. As a result, there are more 1991 and S70 owners than GCT owners. It is just a numbers thing. If you have the disposable cash and don't intend to use it as a Daily CCW piece, a COLT Gold Cup is very hard to beat.

Yeah, this is strictly a range piece, not going to carry it.  Was just looking for the best Colt for $1000.  Thanks guys.

I'm a big fan of my old 1991's, but a Masters deserves something a little nicer. They're entry level and a great platform for tinkering or customizing, and with enough effort they can be as good as or better than an over $1000 1911 (in my opinion) so you can spread your investment over a year or two. If I'd had the money back then, however, I would have gone with one high end for fun and a 1991 to customize for carry.

I would get the Combat Elite.

You're not making this any easier.  :)

So bottom line, you guys would choose the Gold Cup or the Combat Elite over the 1991 (for sure) and even the Series-70 reproduction?

I have a Series 80 Government and it's been great, so is my Rail Gun. Oh, that's what you should look at .. the Rail Gun.

Even though you say that you don't plan to carry it I would tell you to look at a commander size as well.

I am really going a little to into 1911s this year and I blame the anniversary but I am really considering on of the anniversary 01911ANVIII and the MSRP is right around $1100. I know this probably isn't what you are looking for but would make a good investment/momento of your graduation.
