I took my brand new p238 to the range today and shot 81 rounds through it until i noticed the slide failed to lock back after the last shot. Upon further inspection i noticed the slide wouldn't go all the way back even with all my strength. When i field stripped it i found damage;
the spring was completely misshapen and there were nicks and burrs on the feed ramp of the barrel, recoil guide and slide. I took it back to the store where i bought it from and a police officer/gun expert there told me that the spring failed and caused all the other damage as well. he took some pliers to the spring and tried to reshape it and now the gun will somewhat operate. they put in an order for new springs but i'm pretty worried about the nicks all over the gun. especially the ones on the feed ramp. i think i'm going to be calling sig on monday. pics of the damage: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y63/psiloshroom/DSCN1984.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y63/psiloshroom/DSCN1986.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y63/psiloshroom/DSCN1987.jpg |

Err...damn. What occured? Did the spring somehow work out the front of the slide around the guide-rod during firing? Very curious. the spring stayed on the guide rod but was very misshapen and unwound in some spots. Quoted:
Did you note how the spring was oriented when you field striped the pistol? The spring could have been put in backwards at the factory. two guys at the range and the police officer at the store all were arguing over the correct way to put the spring in. the guys at the range said it was in backwards and the guy at the shop said it was in correctly. i read the "maintenance addendum" that came with the pistol but since the spring was taken out and put in so many different ways i can't remember which way it was orientated when i was shooting it. it sounds like that could have been the problem. 8.0 maintenance addendum: "installing the spring backwards will result in damage to the spring box". |

FINALLY got through to sig over the phone today after three days of calling. I work 10 hour days and I have limited time to make phone calls and the wait time always went through my breaks. i also got hung up on a couple of times after 10-15min+ of waiting on hold. once i did get through to a customer service rep he was very helpful and said he would ship two new springs to my door. he also said that the burr (or indent as he called it) on the right side of the feed ramp comes from the factory. can anyone else with a p238 confirm this?
he said i should email him the pics of the wear and he would see if it should be sent back to them. i'll keep ya'll posted on his response. |

My feedramp does not look like that. (on the right side)
Did some research for you. On the early guns, the mag was impacting enough to wear on the feedramp. Sig is aware of this and can cut the ramp back slighty for you. They'll pay for the shipping and it takes approx. 1 week. They have since modified the feedramps on the newer production guns to eliminate that problem. |

the guys at sig said that the spring was in incorrectly resulting in the damaged slide and guide rod.
the fixed it all up though, replaced the spring, sent me two more replacement springs and de-burred all the rough spots. top notch customer service. thanks sig! |
