OK, I was wondering why a press check was jamming up my pistol.
I originally thought it was just the new 47Ds, but it turns out it's this:

The rim of the next round is hanging up in the slot. No idea how it got there...
Now, this is a stainless slide (black mystery coating) and I need to know
if I can fill the nick with my MIG.

Quick spot weld and some file time is not hard, but I don't really do any ss welding...
can I get away with typical mild steel kit? (C25 gas and non-ss wire?)

No worries. Mig it.

What kind of gun and why would there be any stampings in that area?

Alright, HBR... I hope you're right!

This seemed to fix the issue:

Nice and smooth now! Well, as smooth as it needs to be, at least.

Older SA Loaded (1999)
Bazillian mfr. marks I guess? It pretty messy under there.

Why not fill all the marks in and then polish the slide?

That turned out good.  Does it run great now?

Runs excellent!
I'm a little hesitant to drive too much heat into the slide just now...
Maybe someone with TIG, but I'm still more experienced with welding
with less uh, finesse.

Good deal.

I'm not a welder so I can't offer any advice.

If what you did fixes the problem, don't worry about the other markings.

The markings are to show the lot number on the slides so the manufacturer knows who made it, and if there are any problems, which ones to recall.

If you put too much heat into the pistol you can make hard spots and the contrast from hard and soft material means different expansion properties and the crystalline structure of the metal can micro crack.  Micro crack means possible material failure in the future.

What you did will be fine, just don't go overboard if you don't have to.

I had problems with stamping in that area of my SS colt.  I might suggest making sure there is no sharp edge on the letters that might catch a case rim.  I did it with just a slight hit with a dremel.

my kimbers are electropenciled with the serial # on the rear of the slide... luckily no problems to report...
