I'm buying a Springfield Armory .45 1911. The last 1911 I've owned was a Colt Series 70 back in the earily 80's. I know they have come a long way in improving ammo over the years but what about off the shelf 1911's. Springfield in particular. Years ago my Colts wouldn't shoot anything but fmj ball without jamming. What do you all recomend in the way of .45 defensive ammo? |
| I carry 230gr Hydra-shoks. I have been reading good things about the new Taurus 185gr Hex bullets. I've put about 150 of them down range, no jams, mild recoil. From what i've read they expand almost perfectly. I've started carrying with one of them in the chamber, backed up by Hydr-shoks. |

Pro Load or Speer Gold Dots. 230 or 200 gr. +P or regular. Your choice. Pro Load uses Gold Dot bullets and Winchester primers. I also prefer Pro Loads brass. 230 gr Golden Sabers are another good choice, as well 230 Hydra Shoks. They do have a pretty darn good street record. |

Thanks, gentlemen. The only brand of the good defensive stuff was the Fed Hydra Shock 230 gr. JHP. Which I bought. Now I need to run at least 20 rounds through my 1911 to see if it likes eating them. They had lots of cheap Wolf, Win and Magtec. I bought some of the Win 230gr FMJ for break in. Hawkeye: It's good to see you around so much. I can't think of a better person to watch my back. I need all the protection I can get. |

I saw that ammo this past weekend at Walmart. Didn't buy it because it was not exotic enough. But...............you made a very good point. If I run that though all my mags and pistol, I'd get a good feel for reliability. Plus..........I shoot .223 Win white box for plinking ammo. Thanks and welcome to ar15.com. We can always use someone who's got a good head on their sholders. |
I actually have some. Runs fine through my H&K USP 45. Havent tested any for expansion or penetration yet. |
