My digital camera is no good, but I just took my P22 apart and doublechecked.

So the guide rod looks like a nail, right?  Flat end where you'd hit the nail with a hammer?  That big end goes into the frame of the handgun.  The spring goes on the rest of the rod and will hang off the end.

When the slide is on, the smaller end of the guide rod will be flush with the end of the muzzle.  I'm not sure you could even pull the slide back if the rod was backwards, let alone get it off.

ETA - If in doubt, call Smith & Wesson's customer service.  They will have a 100% correct answer for you that they stand behind.  You know, the standard disclaimer, if you hurt yourself, it's not my fault.

ETA #2 - Check the parts diagram on page 15, right about in the middle.  You'll see part #21 lined up with the "receiver" bit.

Thanks Findsman!
And that is what it showed in the manual, but that is NOT how I received it from the factory/dealer.
Thanks Again!
