 I was on the smoking patio at work today and overheard some people talking about CC. What got my attention was an employee saying that he carrys two XDm45 in shoulder holsters. I let that one go. Someone has played to many video games. My concern started when he told an 18 yo employee that A) he can get a CWP at 18 yo B) You do not have to have any firearms training (he stated that he went to the SO, did his finger prints, and left that day with it. It took me 42 days to get mine, and I'm older and far more trained than he is.) C) he stated that he was packing at that very moment. and last but not least, he informed the kid that with a CWP, the rules on deadly force really loosened up. I.E. He stated that if someone approached him and demanded money w/o showing any signs of leathal force, he could use his weapon on him. I was swift with that one and done learned his stupid ass on that one. He decided to go back inside after that.
I am a sup at my job and naturally looked into it later. Turns out he was full of shit. Go figure. After he went back inside I took the oportunity to chat with the kid. Let him know that he CAN NOT in any way have a CWP before 21, also that he has to show proof of firearms training. I even gave the kid some contacts in our area for training. I also explained to him the great responsibilty that comes with chosing to CC. I was not trying to discourage him, just letting him know that it is really something that you have to be dedicated to. We had a long chat about when deadly force is appropriate also. Later in the night he came to my desk and thanked me for the information that I had provided him with. That was a good feeling. I do not understand why some people have to make up bull shit stories. If you have a CWP then you should know the law. I used to like the guy and would chat with him when I saw him. Now I know that he is most likely an armchair commando and thinks that the rules of WOW or COD are the law. Sucks when he finds out the hard way that you can't 're-spawn' in real life. Sorry for the long rant. I take my CC seriously and get pissed when others make it a 'bad ass' kind of thing. Done

We talked breifly about the provisional, but I stressed to him that real training was a great asset to him. And the other guy told him that he had to have NO training/experience of any type. Which we both know is bullshit. It makes sense that you could use USPSA, but to walk in and say "I have no training or experience of any kind. Can I has a CWP?" I think this is what he lead the young'un to believe. On a side note, GLOCKREAPER, If you are in the Boise area we shoul get together and shoot somtime. TD

I think what you did is the right approach. Your patience and understanding probably just saved this person future heartache/embarrassment. This is also another reason why most folks quote or misquote info because they listen/believe what they hear instead of reading and confirming laws, info, protocol..etc. At my workplace I work with a bunch of 25-30 somethings and... ugh nm. I have the same problem.

Hell yeah! lets shoot some time. Blacks creek is closed now. The County came out two weeks ago and told us that we can't shoot there any more. Not sure where to go now. Been going there for years. TD

| I got my CCW in 3 days, but then again I know the sheriff, I went to school and graduated in law enforcement but couldn't find a job due to the economy, and I am local first responder and fireman. But yes training is required the funny thing in MN is my law enforcement training wasn't good enough so even though I could have gotten my peace officer license, I couldn't get a CCW with out taking a CCW class, but the class was very informative and I learned a lot about the specific laws, and made a good friend as well. As far as your friend a the CCW if you haven't learned already many people that have the CCW is down right scary many of these people are morons and give the rest of us a bad name. Seriously you should have to take and IQ test before they give you CCW. There was guy at my work that I used to talk guns with all the time too, he was a CCW and thought he new his stuff, until one day we were talking about CCW in particular. He was telling me how he carries a 44mag like dirty harry, I was shocked then he continues to tell me how he carries when he repos cars which in my state is illegal, and that if some one is a threat he pulls his gun and takes there car, again highly illegal, if you repo cars and there is threat of violence in MN you need preserve the peace and walk away to get it another day. Needless to say I don't talk to him any more after I tried to correct him on his ignorance of the law. |

| Ya did a good job on explaining the facts to the kid. feel bad for you guys on how long you have to wait for a cwp though. I live in nice gun friendly PA where you go to the courthouse undergo a background check and walk out with it 20 min later. no training necessary. but anyway up hear the only way a person under 21 can carry a handgun is 1.) if they have a hunting permit to hunt with a pistol after they are 18, and that only counts for in the woods, not in the truck on the way to the woods, and 2.) I got a buddy who is 19 and a cop, he has a special form that allows him to carry while on the job, and from as i gathered to have possesion of a handgun, that he can take to the range and practice and so forth. not sure if it gives him CC rights though. i think its only for the job and the range. |
