Today, I took a friend to the range.  She had recently purchased her first firearm.  A Glock 19.  Since we were there to play with her 9mm I brought along my HK USP9.  And another friend brought along his Sig 226.  I spent some time with her, working on a proper grip, and by the time we were finished she was able to control muzzle flip with a good two handed grip.  Flinch was another story...  We've got a little work to do on that.

So, after we got her settled she let me put a few rounds down range with the G19.  I was very impressed.  I'd fired a couple of range rentals that felt gritty and sloppy.  But this one (NIB) was smooth.  Short reset, fairly crisp, (still a "dart gun" feel but not as bad as the rubbery HK), but most impressive to me was how easy it is to get a high grip on the gun and keep the muzzle down.  Fast shooting was a piece of cake.  At 25 yards, I put 15 rounds into an 8" cloud just covering the top of the B25 center, and got them all off in less than ten seconds.

I hate to say it, but I wish I could do that with my HK.  I can do that with my 1911 (albiet, only 9 shots because of the mag capacity).  While I won't be giving up my HK, I've got a strong desire for a new 9mm.  Also the G19 was enough smaller to make CCW a whole lot easier.  Dang it, but I hate to say...  I NEED A GLOCK!  A 19 for carry and a 17 for IDPA.  Now if I only had money...

Try a compact USP Compact 9mm. If you manage to find one with a nice trigger stock, they are alot like a 2nd gen glock 19 -- but with a nicer trigger. ;]

Feed the hunger and pick up both.  You won't feel bad at the time.

Just do it man.  You won't be disappointed with either the 19 or 17.  The low bore axis really helps out.

Well that's all fine and dandy.  And I would, but I really don't have any money.  I'm a grad student.

If you were to choose just one.  Would it be a 19 or a 17.  The 19 seems like the perfect carry gun.  Just enough grip to fit the hands, without any extra.  And considering I shot it better than the full sized HK, I probably wouldn't lose anything for IDPA.  Maybe I can put my hands on a 17 and see how that goes.

There are a couple of things I'm parting with anyway, (a mountain bike and an old rifle) that could probably generate the cash for a used one...  Damn this gun addiction.

I can rip with my G19 like no other pistol. If you think that new pistol felt nice, try it once it is broken in. Better yet, try it with a nicely polished 3.5# connector. Learn the pistol, and how to ride the reset, and they are crazy fast. I can draw from concealment and fire two to the chest and one to the head in under two seconds. Dead on, every time. No reason for the bad guy to worry though, its just a 9mm.

Well, I now have a Glock 34 on layaway, a buyer in the works for a couple of the items I was thinning out of the stable.  It won't be too long before I bring her home....  Unfortunately, this means that the HK45 will have to go too.  But, I decided that since I really didn't shoot it that well, I won't miss it too badly.  And, I've got the HK 9 to keep me company in the meantime.

I guess, there's always a way of coming up with funds.  It just depends on what you're willing to give up to do it.
