Has anyone ever installed one of the factory Kimber mag wells. I was thinking of adding one to my Gold Match. Do they require any fitting or is it a drop in part. I'm a novice as far as 1911 customization is concerned. Here is a link to the specific part that I am referring to. http://kimberamerica.com/cart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=5_12_11 Thanks for your input. Matt |

From the looks of it they are the same as the Smith and Alexander Magwell. www.smithandalexander.com/ I have not installed the Kimber but have installed several of the S&A’s. The S&A’s don’t require any special fitting. They are essentially a drop in part. A couple of punches, brass hammer and basic common sense are all that’s needed. The trickiest part is removing the mainspring from the housing and installing it into the new extended magwell. If you are not careful you will launch the mainspring and follower. If your Kimber’s magwell is already beveled then the extended magwells bevel probably won’t match-up. It is usually only a cosmetic issue not a functional issue. Hope this helps. |
| I put one on my Stainless II that I bought from Ed Brown. It is a 2 piece drop in part that may need a spot of red locktite on the bolt that attaches the chut to the mag housing. It appears to be the same as is on my Tactical Pro. Looks and works just fine. If you want a arched housing then go with the S&A as Ed Brown only offeres a flatstyle. |
| The Kimber mag well came in the mail today. It is a two piece assembly like the Ed Brown. It dropped in without any fitting. The only surprise was that the bevel on the frame does not match the bevel on the mag well. When I talked to the custom shop prior to palcing the order I was told that the bevels would match. |
