I was looking at handguns today at the fun store. I was looking at an FNP9 and the guy at the counter told me he had one sent out to fix that had a broken hammer pack(?) (The black plastic piece containing all the springs right in front of the hamer). Is this a common problem or random happening?
I'm thinking of saving up for a high capacity polymer pistol and am looking at the M&P9, FNP9, XD9, and Sig 2022.Figured I'd research all of them. |

What the pistol in question had was a crack in the fire control group.
This was an issue with some FNP-9 and FNP-40 pistols. It made a big splash on interweb gun forums a year or more ago, but the problem was addressed by FN and you really don't see reports of it anymore. I have an FNP-40 and an FNP-45, both have been flawless performers and I do not hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a modern design polymer framed handgun. FN has been making firearms for a very long time and have a well deserved reputation of building quality pieces. They have excellent customer service too. |

About a year ago I was looking for the exact type of pistol that you are. I bought the FNP9. I couldn't be happier. All those guns are quality weapons, with similar price points. I chose the Fnp9 because of the way it felt in my hand. It has been a great gun with no issues in 1k rounds. |

If you buy it new you won't have the problem reported. If you buy it used, you may have the old trigger group and should check with FN. It was a recall repair, so you won't pay for it. AFIK, the problem only existed when the pistols were dry fired without a mag in them. I have around 1K through my FNP9 and could not be happier. It's the first "plastic" pistol I ever picked up and needed to own. I have had exactly one FTE with this weapon and it was some old nickle plated hydrashok ammo that was seriously scarred up.
One problem that you may find is that some mags don't lock the slide up, this seems to be an issue with the mag springs and has been mentioned before. I have two that do it, just haven't gotten around to finding the fix. |

I want to get an FNP9 because of how great it feels in my hand. I also felt this for the M&P9, but what has pushed me towards the FNP9 is that it has a manual safety version and they have a discount for MIL/LEO and I can get it for $445.
Thanks for the heads up on the FNP's FCG. The guy at the funstore tried steering me away because of that issue, but if it was so limited an issue I can rest easy. |

How do you go about getting their military discount I'm active Army and thinking about getting an FNP 45 |

I went through the comparison exercise about a year ago when I decided I wanted a polymer framed 9mm. I tried a lot of guns and really made the decision on what I liked and what I shot well without so much attention to brand. I think that Glocks are great, but I never seem to shoot them well so they were ruled out. I settled on the FNP9 and have been in love with it ever since. I have been a fan of FN for years and I have a FN designed FAL which is an amazing weapon. The FNP was designed for hard use by military and police so I felt like I was buying something that would last. They are also made about 90 minutes south of me in Columbia SC which is kind of cool. I am planing on an FNP45 next year too. I hope you like yours as much as I like mine.

I recently purchased a new FNP9 and I had to return it because of the cracked Fire Control Group problem. I called Bob at FNHUSA and he is taking care of it for me. Customer service appears to be friendly and knowledgable but I did had call them again a couple days later in order to have the return label sent
I hope they fix it quick, I was having a lot of fun taking it to the range. |

I spoke with Bob and Ken or Kent about my FNP recently and also had to call back to get the return label. The lady who deals with them was out of the office. This was last week - maybe we both called them on the day that she was out. I just called to ask them what I could do about my magazines not always locking the slide and they said just send it in. Very good people to deal with. I am surprised that you got a cracked fire control - do you remember what datestamp your spent cartridge came with? Mine is an '07 and it had to have the upgrade, but it was done sometime in '08 IIRC.

How did you know your fire control group was cracked? I noticed my hammer pin was walking today. I need to call Bob tomorrow. |
