Greetings,

I made one gun buying mistake a few days ago.  I walked into a gun store not knowing much about the gun and walked out with it.
I picked up a used SIG 228 manufactured in 2003 according to the empty casings that came with it.  It says made in Germany.  I convinced my father to buy a 229DAK over a XD a couple months ago, however I have a few questions about the 228 and SIG's in general.
It was very clean.  Very little wear marks on the locking block.  The store owner said the guy who previously had it traded it in for a XD45.  Wanted a bigger bullet for concealed carry apparently.  It came with 2 mags and all the literature was still in the case.

1.  Is the roll pinned breech block on the 228 the only difference from a forged 229 slide?

2.  On the inside of the slide there are some very noticeable circular end mill marks.  Is this normal.

3. The part numbers match in the manual, but I'm "assuming"  can use 229 magazines.

4.  Which models of Sig's carried sheet metal slides

5.  What did these sell for knew when they were in production?  Not MSRP, but self price.

I haven't shot it yet. It's been very cold and rainy the past few days.  If it's anything like my fathers 229, I'll be more than happy.

Thanks for any help

There are other differences that someone more knowledgeable can point out

2.  On the inside of the slide there are some very noticeable circular end mill marks.  Is this normal.

Yup, all three of my stamped slides have had those mill marks

3. The part numbers match in the manual, but I'm "assuming"  can use 229 magazines.

Yup

4.  Which models of Sig's carried sheet metal slides

P220, P225, P226, P228

5.  What did these sell for knew when they were in production?  Not MSRP, but self price.

I paid $825 for my 228 in '94 on the eve of Clinton's AWB, so I paid more that I should have

$660 for a new P220 in '96

The P228 slide is stamped while the P229 slide is milled.

Yes

P229 9mm only

4.  Which models of Sig's carried sheet metal slides
P228, P226, P225, P245, P220. Basically all the discontinued Sig models and older P226 and P220's

650.00

The 228 is one of the best pistols I ever owned.

If it was made in Germany, you can get the approximate date of manufacture from the proof marks on the bottom, front of the slide.

You’ll also note that the P228 has an internal extractor, while the P229 has an external one.

The P228 has a carbon steel slide that can rust if not taken care of.  The P229 has a stainless steel slide (probably with a black Nitron finish).

My 228 is my regular carry pistol.  I like the balance better than the milled 226 and 229s.  Reliable and accurate, easy to conceal, fits my hand great for a compact pistol.

228 slide is more slender than the 229, maybe a touch ligher too.
229 .40/.357 mags are too wide to fit a 228.
229 9mm mags are 228 mags.

older 226's have stamped welded slides too
don't recall if the 228's ever had the solid stainless slides.

fyi - 229 9mm is basically a 228 with a 229 'style' slide. The top halves will interchange on those two. (haven't done it myself but my Sig buddy tells me it's true)

At one point I had an older 228 and a 229 .357. I liked carrying the 228 better - the 229 just felt too thick and heavy in comparison.

Thank you all for the replies.  I'm now a much more informed SIG owner.  If I like this one I'll have to look into the 220.
Thanks again,

Wow, that's steep.  Got my 229 9mm for $670 with three mags.  Most dealers have them for $700+

Mecgar makes a 15rd mag.  Mecgar makes Sig factory mags, the 228/229 was originally 13rds.  Mecgar changed the follower and sells the same mag under their name.

I like the German mags over the new ones. Yes the price is steep but we give lifetime fixes with the guns and 30 days on are range for free ($9.50 per day = around $300)

You bought a sweet pistol, they are going to be scarce one day so hang on to it. Load it up with some Winchester Ranger T ammo and I promise you if you have to shoot someone with it, they won't say, hey thats just a 9mm.
