I have been considering a 1911 for some time now. In the past, I have always had Glocks, HK's, etc... but never a 1911. I am looking hard at Colt, 1991 series 80. I have been a big fan of Colt rifles, but unfortunately I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to 1911's, so I want to be sure to get a good one. Reliability is my absolute main requirement. Also, I would prefer it not to be stainless for my first one.
As for budget... I would like to stay under $800 if possible with an absolute max at a grand. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone has any links on where to go for information, I would appreciate it. Thanks! |

For your price range,a Colt 1911 series 80 is a good choice, for more frills in that price range a Springfield loaded would work. I have 5 Colt series 80's and 8 Colt series 70 pistols,no issues at all other than one losing the front staked sight. I did have three Les Baers, two were unreliable,my series 80 pistols were superior than the les Baers i had,all the baers are gone, and were replaced by two Wilson Combats and two Nighthawks. In my case, baers dont even come close to a Wilson..i 'll take a Colt, any colt any day of the week over a baer. Dan Wessons are a better choice over a baer for the same price range. |

Quoted: You are actually comparing a stock 80 series and calling it better than a Les Baer? While the Colt may function well it is in no way equal to a semi custom. I have had three Baers and still have a TRS that has been 100% reliable.Quoted: I have been considering a 1911 for some time now. In the past, I have always had Glocks, HK's, etc... but never a 1911. In my case yes,i had nothing but issues with my baers, also know a few friends that had issues.Other than accuracy, the baers i had were never nowhere as reliable as my colts. Not reliable proves a gun worthless to me,that's why they are gone.I know it might be hard to understand for some that a baer might not work, but it happens. I have 20 each 1911's currently.....all work without issue out of the box regardless of price.......a Para and two baers ive had did not,i just purged them out of my collection and moved on.And yes,i did call the manufacture..and was told to shoot another 1500 rds thru it before it would be reliable......had already put 1000rds thru each one...not a good answer for me.The person that bought my baers had a local smith do some reliabiltiy work on the guns, they now work, but at a cost to him.I lost money on them, had i paid to have had them fixed, still would have lost money. This was my experience.....the para, parts breakin on it every time i shot it,absolute garbage. |

Thank you for the replies everyone. I greatly appreciate them. At this point, I am seriously leaning toward a Colt Rail gun. I really like the all black cerekoted version. I like that it has some of the ambi features built in - I am a lefty and like these features. The only small downside is the rollmarks on the all black version are not the same as the stainless version. The dancing pony and 100 years of service are not on the black version. (or at least I have not been able to find one with those markings).
I am also considering a Springfield Armory loaded version as well. They seem to be a little cheaper, but I don't like the fact that they are not made in the USA. Please keep the suggestions coming. Thanks! |

I bought a Kimber Custom TLE II 1911 this year, put about 500 rounds through it so far with no problems. I honestly don't think I could be any happier with my purchase. You can pick up either of these for under $1000 +FFL fee.

The Colt Combat Elite is a great package if you are a fan of two-tone 1911s. Widely available from $900 or so.
Short of that, the 1991 Series 80 is a good choice if you can live with the standard Government model configuration (spur hammer, old-style grip safety). |

Kimber Custom TLE II Kimber Custom TLE Rail II" I can second this recommendation. Just shot my Dad's kimber custom TLE Rail this weekend. Most accurate "out of the box" non-custom gun I have ever shot. Dad is 72 years young. He picked it up gently used for around $800. We both shot one hole groups with 7 rounds from 7 yards. Won't have the resale value of a Colt, and not as accurate as a custom gun, but a good gun for the price. Just read some recent reports that Kimber quality has taken a dive. Might do some research before buying one. My experiences and guns all pre-date the recently reported quality issues. |
There is no denying that the Les Baers shoot great, but you can get 2 colts to the Les Baer and whats an extra inch in accuracy, thats what you shoot a 45 for right. All you gotta do is hit some skin somewhere and that should stop yeah pretty good. Like everybody says the colt will never loose its value. Would love to have a Les Baer but I have 4 colts and will continue to buy them because of the way they hold there value and also the way they shoot and function. I've had 2 Kimbers, they were good but not like the colts.
