Hello all,

Wanted to buy a pistol, and was considering several until I arrived at the gun store. As soon as I put it in my hand I knew it was the one for me. 549.99 out the door.

I've had it for a little over a week, have not had a chance to shoot it yet (too much work ) So far my only complaint is that it can be an absolute bitch to pull back the slide. Hopefully when it's broken in it will loosen up a little bit. Second complaint is that the mag release button is very hard to hit. I can't hit it with either my thumb nor my middle finger. I have to actually turn the pistol slightly in order to drop the magazine.

Overall though, I am extremely satisfied thus far. The extra goodies were nice, especially since this is my first handgun. I will be going to a range tomorrow after work to finally punch some holes. Can't wait!

Congrats. Looks like you will have to call in sick.

Congrats

How are you racking the slide?  Try cupping your off hand over the back of the slide so that your thumb is pointing to the rear of the gun.  Make sure you don't cover the ejection port. Pull back with your off hand and push forward with your weapon hand.

The mag release should loosen up with use.

O'yea........geez can't believe you didn't buy a Glock... what were you thinking ! You know if you'd pull your head outta........ Those are just a few things I either said or had running through my mind when # 1 son called and said he bought an XD40... You'll see dad he said, we'll go shoot it when I get home...... Well I see the light well enough to own two XD's and the air is fresher up here.. My XD45 is a compact... I've thought lots about selling mine and buying the one you have pictured... I'd have it drop shipped to Springer Precision and have the grip cut down to a compact... for carry. Then have him ship it back with a new sear and trigger bar to complete the work myself. Grip safety and a thumb safety cut down for carry with a good trigger. Well it would be sweet. Enjoy.

Edit: almost forgot... the springs lighten over a couple thousand rounds....

Excellent choice!  My wife's first pistol was an XD45 Compact, and she absolutely loves that gun.

Don't worry about the slide.  It will loosen up a bit, but even more importantly you'll get stronger, and you'll get used to the feel of it.  I bet you'll be racking it without a second thought in a month.

As stated above the slide and mag release will break in.

I put some Super Lube (silicone grease) on the mag release (inside the frame). I then sat and repetitively pushed it while watching TV. Shortly after that, I did a 4-day course at Front Sight and had no problems.

Awesome. Good to know that the slide and mag release will break in. Was not able to get to the range today because I have to be the designated driver for my sister and her friends

But tomorrow, right after work, I WILL go to the range!!! At least I hope so!

We want a range report!!!!

Congrats on your first gun- and a fine choice at that.  I own a XDm40 and am considering a XD compact or subcompact for conceal in the summer (Alaska winters make a 1911 easy to hide).

Don't sweat the stiff slide and mag release.  They will loosen up slightly, but more importantly you will learn how to rack the slide efficiently and most likely in more than one way- just remember to use both hands working against each other (left hand pulls, right hand pushes- with the finger out of the trigger guard).

Also, the tightness is a sign of quality- imagine how you would feel if it was loose and sloppy- it would probably still be on the shelf at the gun store.

Enjoy it...shoot the heck out of it and let us know how it goes.

I finally had a chance to shoot it with my friends the day before I headed out for college. Between the 4 of us, we only shot 50 rounds in total but we all had fun.

Not sure when my first break to go home is, but I will be sure to actually take some pictures next time

I have to smack the magazine while pressing the release button.

The slide will loosen up a little, but there is  a VERY tight spring in the XD. They do this so it'll handle +P ammo.

Love it. My other friend brought a cheap 9mm pistol and once he fired mine he just looked at me and said, "Wow, I wish I went for the .45 instead of the 9mm"

I just signed up for a Tactical Hand Gun course offered at my college. I can't use my own pistol due to legal reasons, but it's taught by several professionals which will help me with my piss poor accuracy hopefully.

I too am attending a handgun class.  I figure, if you are gonna own one, you best know how to use it PROPERLY.  I have been shooting for many years now, but with little to no thought on technique or tactics- just wasting ammo at cans.  Good luck in the class, I am sure you will learn more than you even knew was there.

Wow.  A College offering a Tactical Handgun Course.  Not heard of in these parts.  Surprised they let you in NH!  Then again, Not too many states are more restrictive than IL regarding firearms laws.
Anyways, congrats on the purchase!  I will be looking at an XD45 eventually, I do have an XD and SA 1911.  Just want to grow the family.

Very nice what caliber is your new XD? Have you had a chance to shoot it? I have the XD .40cal Subcompact with houge grips and pearce mag grip extrensions. I have almost 800 rounds through my XDsc never a single problem. The first 200 rounds was cheap blazer brass looked awful I even cleaned each round functioned flawlessly. Last 600 rounds or so has been 100 packs Winchester S&W 40ca from Walmart ammo looks and works so well I use it for home defense.

When I got my XDsc the slide was embarrasing to rack for anyone due to the spring and less area to grab. The trigger felt like a revolver had to be around 7lbs.

Now after 800 rounds. (sometimes I only put 2 rounds in a mag 20 times helps break in)  slide is easy to pull with either hand or index/thumb.

trigger breaks crisp feels slightly more than a 3.5lb trigger on a glock. Cannot feel internals anymore through triggerpull so overal I love this trigger now.

slide release is easy to do now without hurting your thumb. Mag release works good now (Clean behind it from magwell)

Only thing with my XDsc was my buddy tried cramming a 12round sub mag with grip extension in backwards... Now I've seen everyone do this including guys at gunshops... problem was the cramming in doing that he scored the inside of magwell about 1 1/2 inches. At the time of said cramming there wasn't any malfunctions or after until I purchased a new 9 round 40 cal XD mag. It was hanging up in the magwell after pressing the release. the guys at my gun shop said to sand the magazine a little I said try magazine in another XDsc and it slide in and out no problem.

So I took it home took it apart looked in the magazine well and seen the huge scratch. So I used a pencil cone shaped file to smooth it out. Just FYI.
