Allow me to introduce myself My names Jeremy and ive been shooting for about 7 years. I went out yesterday and bought a RIA M1911 .45 for my first pistol. I figured since i was buying my first one a Kimber or something of that price range is a little too deep for my pocket. Now my question, what are some things that i should do before i shoot it? Im buying it second hand if that helps. Any imput would be appreciated.

welcome to the site!

here is a recent topic on RIAs and lots of subtopics listed in it:
www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=5&f=49&t=52045

FWIW: while RIAs are not the top of the line, if it works and if you got it for a very decent price, then you might be very satisfied in your purchase....so  all i can say is shoot it and enjoy!

keep an eye out for your springs and how fast they may or may not wear out; RIA springs tend to be made not too well/in spec sometimes and its longevity and overall reliablity affected--i'd suggest you either change out your springs now or at least get spares on hand (FP springs, 3 prong leaf springs, and recoil springs are the one's i'd get)

I always go 10-15% higher than OEM on my recoil springs if they're available.

Strange, I always just spring the pistol for the loads that will be run in it (read not sure if the slide in my SSA will even move back under cycle with a 18.5lb recoil spring shooting 165MPF loads, since it performs perfect with the 13lb spring currently residing in it).

But will note, if you are going to lessen the hammer spring for a lower trigger pull weight, you will need to make up the tension differances in either a stronger recoil spring, or square bottom FP stop when shooting ball loads.

No clue about your power load ratings & whatnot. All I know is *I* shoot generic ball ammo, 230gr.
