I have an STI Trojan that I just bought about a month ago and I've put probably 250 rounds through it so far.  At first the front sight was fine but now every time I shoot it the front sight starts to slide out towards the left.  Its a dovetail front sight but it isn't staked or anything so I can just tap it back to the middle but after about 50 rounds it will start sliding out again.  I am planning on changing the front sight anyway but I won't be doing that for a little while because I want to wait until I have the money for both the front and rear sights so I want to figure out how to get this sight to stay put.  It isn't loose in the dovetail or anything, I can't slide it back and forth with just my fingers so I'm thinking maybe I should take it off and then put some loctite or something on the bottom to keep the sight from sliding.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,
 Matt

My suggestion would be to remove the sight completely, then clean the sight and dovetail with some alcohol.  Then re-install with some red loctite.  Make sure you get the sight where you want it fairly quickly.  The stuff dries fast, and once it does that sight won't be moving anywhere without some heat.

Another soluion would be to remove the front sight and stake it slightly at the dovetail.  This should help hold it in place while still allowing you to readily remove it when you want to replace it.  I had a Para with a loose front sight and this worked for me.

So you're suggesting that he use a product that will require a torch to remove as a temporary fix until he gets his new sights? What does heat do to blued steel?

The amount of heat required to break the bond of the Loctite will not harm the bluing. It will, howeve, melt any sort of white dot, fiber optic, or glue holding a tritium insert. What I would suggest is removing the sight, and with a good SHARP center punch, stipple the bottom of the sight itself. This will alter the gun in no way, but will displace enough metal that the sight should hold in the dovetail quite well.

Would blue loctite work?  I know it isn't as strong as the red loctite so maybe it would hold the sight in well enough but not be a pain in the ass to remove.
