| Ok so recently ive been wanting something more to shoot, i love my keltec but i want something bigger, easier to shoot accurate. Started out thinking i wanted a 1911. i do but my dad reminded me that .45 seems to be worse then .380 to find around here. and then mentioned that i already have a surplus of 9mm so why not stick with that. so im taking his advice. My question is how are both the G19 and G17, im leaning toward the G19 because i may carry it in the winter, and the keltec during the summer. So i posted here... take me to glock school guys and girls. |

This is a tough one. I own a G17, but use an issued G19 for work. I like the slightly larger grip of the G17 and don't feel like I'm running out of grip the way I do with the G19.
On the other hand, the highly respected Larry Vickers says if you can own only one Glock, the G19 is the way to go. It is an easier to conceal weapon and accurate enough. The other choice you might want to consider is the S&W M&P 9mm. The size is between that of a 17 and 19 and it has some features that Glocks do not e.g. adjustable grip inserts to accomodate hand size. I love my M&P .45 and have a limited edition 9mm on order. |

IMHO if you will/might carry it, get the 19 –– it'll do everything a 17 will but carries/conceals a bit easier without giving up anything (except 2 rounds, assuming sticking with flush mags) unlike the 26 which, while smaller still, sacrifices a bit of comfort and controllability (to ME, others disagree so YMMV) and even more rounds. My favorite Glocks to shoot are my 17L and 34, but my primary CCW has been a 19 for 15 years now. If they didn't reside in my gloveboxes I probably wouldn't even own a single plain 17, let alone the four I have. ![]() |

took me a long time to warm up to Glocks...once I bought the 19, I soon got the 17, a 34 slide, a 26, and a 17L slide on the way.
They are fun for some cheap, easy, effective gunsmithing on your own. Gott pick 'em both up and see which feels more like home to you. Better yet, shoot 20 0rds out of each - I found aftger a short while that the 19 leaves my top grip (second) finger in pain - might try a fix I saw to remove just a pinch of the trigger guard where my finger gets mashed, I like them all - the 26 is wuickly becoming a favorite gun, after my alterations. I do the following to my Glocks: SS captured guide rod, Vanek trigger (except the 26 - I carry it with a Clipdraw, so it got a NY1 trigger (8lbs) and a 3.5 connector), Warren Tactical sights, Hogue grip. I also put a Dawson ICE magwell on my 17, and a brass slug plug the 26 got Scherer grip extensions for its mags, which allows me to wrap my pinky - this is the most comfortable grip of the three, as the 'hump' is in the best location for my hand. |
|
I started off with a G17, then traded it later for a G19.
I didn't think that a half inch here or there would make a huge concealability difference but it does, at least to me. I am starting to carry my G19 more than my 1911, even. My only mods are Mepro 3-dot tritiums and an extended slide release. |

I would agree with everyone about getting the G19 I have a G31 same frame and just a different caliber but I love it I can conceal it, shoot it accurate, fits my hand, has the accessory rail so if you want a light unlike the G26/27/33, G19 will fit the G17/18/19 mags, and the compact models just seem to fit better in all the hiding spots you need to put them in.
I myself have fullsize, compacts, and sub-compacts and the 19/23/32 models are all great pistols because they find that middle ground for everything CCW, range shooter, and practicality. So my opinion get yourself that G19 and then in a few months when you are hooked on your Glock get another one until you are like all us other Glock addicts and have 8 or more. |

my other choices are The HK USP9 compact or fullsize or possibly the p30, ive been leaning toward glock for some reason... which is odd ive just never liked the way they look The P30 makes things happen in my pants when I hold it... I'm still getting a Glock instead, though. |

My vote is for the G17. Outstanding fighting pistol. Not that hard to conceal. I carry one every day.
G19 is great too though. Really, you can't go wrong with either one. Comes down to which one fits your hand best, or which one you shoot best. OP, if what you're used to in the accuracy department is that Kel-Tec, either one of these will blow that away. It'll definitely be a step up. |

Furioso, Where are you getting those Glock slides. I already have a 34 and a 17L, but no 17. I'd like to get a 17 upper that I could use on the 34 or 17L lower. Brazos Jack |

The problem is, the 19 is perfect if you have medium-to-large hands. The 17 isn't near as concealable as the 19 due to the butt.. Barrel length doesn't impinge on concealability near as much as the butt length. For me, the butt/grip made the 17 feel like an unwieldy club and the 19 is perfect. I DO like the longer sight plane and stability of the 17 barrel, frame and slide when shooting. Here's a pic of a 17 mag in the chopped down 19-sized grip.: http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b163/bduffel/HPIM1129.jpg That's a pretty big difference. And here is a better photo of the left side of the "1917" or "19L". Perfect for me but YMMV. If I could have only one off-the-shelf it would be a 19. I don' t understand, for the life of me, why Glock doesn't offer a 17 length gun with the shorter 19 grip, like Colt does with the 1911 and so many 1911 clones do. If you ever handled, carried and shot one of these you would probably agree that it is the damned near perfect compromise configuration for the Glock platform. The tiny Glocks are great but this is a lot more fun to actually shoot. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b163/bduffel/HPIM1126.jpg Ratsass- Who cut that down for you? I'm thinking of getting a 34 and possibly chopping the magwell to 19 dimensions. I used to carry a 1911, and the length never bothered me, but the grips definately make it harder to conceal. |
|
Both will make you happy... If you have biggish hands you'll probably want the 17. Otherwise you'll probably like the 19 more. Both will do almost anything you can ask of a sidearm.
Go handle both and buy the one you like. I will say, if you want night sights, consider getting them from factory. It can save you both money and headaches over having them added later. |

AR4U- did it myself with an Xacto saw and knife. There are several folks that do it commercially if you check on GlockTalk.com. It's not hard but is pretty scary when starting. The tough part is getting the angle of the bottom of the grip right as they are very different between the 17 and 19- I slipped a 19 mag in to get the right angle, cut off "not enough" of the grip frame length then snuck up on the final dimension.
ETA: Here you go. Found a couple of old links. http://www.bowietacticalconcepts.com/pictures.html http://www.rosssportinggoods.com/612600.html There is another, that does outstanding work, that I don't still have the link to. |

Quoted: You need a 17 and a 19, then you might as well get a 26 these are just my 9mm glocks http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss11/armedpete/arpics051.jpg?t=1246420487 You're missing a couple... ![]() |

The decision really comes down to carry. I have a Glock 19 for CCW carry and I carry it more then anything else (I also carry a S&W 3913 and Taurus M85 5-shot 38). With that said my primary SHTF gun is the Glock 17 and I have a pair of them and I really like the Glock 17 for shooting at the range better then the 19 and I really like the extra capacity.
If I could only have one it would be the Glock 19 but I don't live in a world where I can only have one so I got both

for CCW, I carried a 32 (same frame as the 19) it was a comfortable easy to conceal firearm.
i ended up ditching the 32 for the 30SF and i love it. my first glock was a 17, it is accurate and reliable. i've run 1000s of rounds through it right out of the box for CCW, i'd go G19. it's only a 2rd difference from the G17 and you can always run 17rd G17 mags in the G19 |
