I had my mind set on buying a Kimber for a long time... until I started reading here and other places.
Now I know that not everyone has had problems with their Kimbers but I decided not to take the chance, so I was starting to look for a Dan Wesson.
That was until today.
Turns out that Cabela's was having one of their gun table swap meet show thingies this weekend. Well since I was driving by I had to stop in. I've never been to one of their "sales" before.
There it was, just sitting there all lonely. A Custom Classic with an ambi safety. (I'm hopelessly left handed)
When I got my paws on it I noticed something. (back to that in a minute)
Me: Can you do any better on this price?
Cabela: I can't but the guy over there might be able to do something.
Me: Let's go for a walk.
Cabela manager: (after checking the computer) I can do $625ºº.
Me: Done!

The cashier that was taking care of me was saying how much he liked Kimbers.
Me: Did you notice anything odd about this one?
Cashier: What do you mean?
Me: Look at the name again... Custom Classic. It's the first generation Kimber. Not a Classic II.
Cashier:

Me: Thanks man.

Bottom line is, I think I done good!

The ambi safety's not stock, I don't think.  Looks good though.

Give us a range report.

I love my classic custom as well got mine abour 4 months ago from a gun shop a friend of mine owns.  Someone traded it in unfired, I bought it the same day from him.  Came with the box, paperwork, etc.  Got it for 500 bucks which was a steal since I have helped him out quite a bit at the shop.  He made some money, I got a good deal its a win win situation.  He said the gen 1 really wouldnt have sold any different than a series 2 in his shop because the people looking really wouldn't know what they were looking at and wouldn' t know why one was more sought after than the other.

At $500, I'd call that a gift.

I still don't think I did bad on mine.

Yeah, it looks like it's in great condition, so that was definitely a steal.

Shot it yet?

I haven't been to the range yet, maybe sometime this week I'll stop in Champion Arms to put a box through it.
I did pick up a Kimber mag with bumper at the gun show for $15 though. That made the show worth while.

Sweet find, I kind of wish I would have made it down to the sale. I found a series I compact aluminum for $400 that was really lightly used a couple of months ago. It really doesn't seem to like the factory mag, but dropped in a Chip McCormick and it works wonders, gun is really nice and tight, you're going to like the custom even more!

Good find indeed!!! Did the clerk really know the difference after you told him? I wouldnt hesitate buying a pre series II Kimber....

I would suggest that you dont buy any more Kimber mags and invest in the Wilson Combat mags (47Ds).... utterly reliable. I know some folks have good luck with the Kimbers and others, but go Wilson and never look back. I dont use anything else even at the range.

And here is my Classis Custom:

I bought that Kimber mag because it was new or like new and cheap.
Wilson's are in the future, for sure.

Still haven't been to the range yet.

You'll get there sooner or later.  I know how that goes, same here.

And yes, definitely go with the Wilson 47Ds.  They run great in mine.  So do the McCormicks, for that matter.

I have two Pre-series II Kimbers, a Custom Classic and a Pro Elite. The early pistols are great. I have heard so many negative things about the Series II pistols I can't bring myself to buy any of them.
