I know that Gen 1 Glocks have no light rail and Gen 3 do.  What is a Gen 2 and what other differences are there in the different generations?

I don't know.  They all work.  I know guys that are still carrying the Gen 1 for duty.

Ok, with a little research I think I found my own answer.

Glock born on dates

It appears that the 1st gen has a stippled grip.  Gen 2 has a checkered grip.  and Gen 3 has the finger groves and light rail.

The 3 basic grips of each gereration:

and the 2.5 gen, grooves - no rail

The link in the above post is fairly accurate up to about the end of '99(information copied from the book, The Complete Glock Reference Guide by PTOOMA productions), after that it is a lot of guess work and public input.

Also the dates are NOT WHEN THE GUN WAS MANUFACTERED, they are from the date they were imported(up to '99) and from the date off of the envelope as to when they were test fired.

There's also the thumb shelf that they added with Gen-2.5.
